30/30 bullet question ina handi twist

I have always had excellent accuracy and performance with 125 gr bullets. I only use heavier when I need a RN or FN bullet. Any bolt, TC, or handi has shot the spire or PSP extremely well. The 7.62X39 does.....

My old 058 shoots the 125 Ballistic Tips quiet well.  Tried some of the SSPs (Single Shot Pistol) bullets in 135 grain and they did fair, not as well as the ballistic tips though.  I haven't tried either one on game though.

John- my old topper shoots 130gr. hornady spire point pistol bullets very well and has taken a few deer. thejanitor

  I believe they are intended for the 30 Carbine, but the Speer 110gr HPs shoot real well in my Handi.

I have had similar experience with the Hornady 100gr short jacket in my 30-30.....it is the most accurate bullet I have run through it.    I haven't hunted with it only tried it on paper where I get routinely get .75" groups at 100.

I'm thinking about a Handi in 30-30. I have a couple of boxes of the old Speer 130gr HPs I am thinking about using. I do know @ 30-06 velocities they do massive damage on deer sized game and with a little load development the are pretty darned accurate. I'm using them in front of H414. Seems to be very consistant in '06. From the info I've garnered here, thank you, the 30-30 is a good caliber to own in a Handi. This is a great site people. Y'all have helped me w/my first rebarrel. 125 sierra pro hunters behind 34.5 grains h4895 col at 2.68 produces dime size 100 yard groups in my handi. Going to start working with the 125 nosler bt as its higher bc adds almost 200 more ft lbs of energy at 200 yards and over. Going to try it at a col of 2.78 and work up from 34 grains and see how she goes.

I have had extremely good accuracy with the 125 and 130 bullets when using 35grs. of BLC2.  I have never bothered to check the velocity because the load has been so deadly on everything from varmints to deer.

   Years ago R-P made a "Trapper's load" so a trapper only had to carry one gun. It was an 85 grain round nose FMJ.

   You can duplicate this load with handgun bullets intended for a .30 Mauser.

This is interesting. I'm thinking the 30 Mauser 86 gr Hornady RN bullet on top of 10 grs of Trail Boss would give you a great pest and plinking cartridge at about 1350 fps - within pistol performance envelope, no recoil, and economical.

This bullet makes a pretty good plinking/small game load in 30/30 out to 50yds when kept around 1500/1800fps. My favorite load uses IMR Trail Boss.

Many years ago I bought a Lyman .32 cal round ball dirt cheap.  I've used for making buck shot and fishing sinkers.  Last fall I ran some of the .32 round balls though a Lee .309 sizer and they came out a little longer but rounded on both ends.  I haven't weighed them but I doubt they much over 65 grains.

Anyway they shoot great out of my .30-30's with 4 to 6 grains of Red Dot...  I figured they would be good in case I ran across a silver-gray squirrel during deer season...

here are two light Boolit weight Cast Boolit loads that I have tried so far…
H&R 30-30 Handi-Rifle, 1¾-5X scope
 
 
 30-30 R-P brass;
 WLP primer;
Lyman 3118 - 120 grain plain base, at .311" and '8' BHN (50:50 alloy)
 7.5 grains Unique
 2.375" oal
 chronographs at 1480 fps     this shoots great at 50 yards,
penetration; blows thru 2 - gallon size milk jugs of water at 50 yards !!
 this Lyman 3118 boolit is 0.635" long

 
30-30 WW Super brass;
 WLP primer;
 2.5 grains Red Dot
 2.395" oal
 Ideal 311241 - 105 grain plain base, from a modified mould. '8' BHN (50:50 alloy)
 didn’t chronograph, but should duplicate .32 Colt RF out of a rifle barrel – groups are just a bug hole at 25 yards,
this Ideal 311241 boolit is 0.613" long, it is a round nose plain base boolit with one lube grove and a dirt scraper grove.
