Neck sizing 45/70 now 11.7 Danish. die adjustment.
« on: January 30, 2004, 04:24:13 PM »
Can some of you with 45/70 dies tell me what the inside/outside neck measurement is after you size?  My first loads I neck sized my cut down from 45/70 to Danish 11.7  I used my .45LC dies.  It worked OK but it sized them way small.  The Dane is supposed to like .459  projectiles.  My lee 405hb throws them a bit fat at the base.  +.462.  I will need to size them down.  My assorted brass measues neck thicness of .010 to .011.  I figure .459 plus .021 = .480 reduce it say .004 and I should have enough neck tension to need the press to seat the bullet.  OD=.476 should do it.  I have a old straight walled die that I may be able to open up to .476 and use it to size 1/2 in of neck and then but a slight bell in the brass and stuff the bullet.  I read about BP loading without sizing and just seating the bullet with finger pressure.  The Dane has a generous chamber.  My oversized bullets fall to the base and I have not yet sized them.  My Gut tells me that buying 45/70 dies would be a waste of money.  Data and comments requested.  Thanks in advance.  JB

My recollection is that the Lyman neck size dies size to ~0.476".  .I think one of them would work well, but you really need a custom expander plug of ~0.460-0.461" diameter to get the neck ready for the 0.462" bullets.

45-70 full-length size dies size consiferably smaller than that, but they are straight tapers, so you can back them off as far as needed to get the diameter you need.
