Well...I didn't get in on the Weatherby's at Walley world for what Like2hunt and others got them for..and I still paid more for it...even went as far as fixing it up...a-lot...orderd a new Weatherby Accumark stock from the factory...and a Timney trigger for it...and it shoots great...heck...it shot pretty good out of the box as it was...but I did look at all the other cheap package guns...and felt them all....Wichesters...Savages...Mossbergs...and the Steven...none of them felt as good as the Weatherby...even in its cheap stock...I adjusted the trigger pull down as far as it would go...wasn't too bad...but with the Timney...it's like a glass rod breaking every time I pull the trigger...and the new stock makes it feel as good as the best Mark IV's...

It's all a matter of personal taste...some folks like Chevy's...others like Fords...some wouldn't buy either ...and go with Chyslers...and others can't stand any of them...me...I go by my gut...and since Weatherby gives you the target shot by them...it makes seeing the potintial easier than just guessing...

I love the 300 win magnum cartridge.  I would not get a light 300 magnum.   If you settle for a 300 magnum get the Howa.  If you settle for a smaller caliber then you might look at a stevens or savage.  Also, if you get the magnum you can hunt about anything around with this cartridge.  I know some that say the cartridge is overkill for deer, but it really drops them.

Ordered another Stevens 200 in 7mm-08, will be here Friday. My 25-06 doing less than an inch MOA. They do need a trigger job or an SSS trigger, but for hunting, they're ok.......

I keep reading and am wondering fi the new Stevens comes in a leftie as my Savage rifles do?...I was seriously thinking of a Browning A-bolt in ss with the syn stock, but I read a post a day or 2 ago where changing cals was discussed...I know the Savage is easy to change but wasnt sure on the others...well some guy posted a situation on the browning that would be a good thing to find out...he claimed to have a friend that took a bran new one to a smith to have a different barrel installed...well when all was said and done some of the threads came off the barrel and some came out of the action...seems like if you can believe this, Browning is using epoxy to keep anyone from changing barrels...if this is true, then that makes them a throw away gun doesnt it?.....I also read an article in one of the gun mags that says that Wwatherby test fires all of the rifles before shipment and takes all of the exceptional grouping rifles and sells them for more money...if I remember right that was in an article in Guns and Ammo...with all the crazy stuff ya hear anymore, it almost makes me think a wise man buys older used rifles...just my thoughts....WW1

Why not get the Model 110GXP3, comes with the AccuTrigger and only weights 3/4 of a lb. more in weight.  Go to http://www.savagearms.com/110gxp3.htm to view it.  It has a wood stock, while not fancy it IS much better than the synthetic stock in my opinion.  Whatever caliber you get(for deer at ranges you stated I don't think you can do better than a .270 Win.) I don't believe that the Howa built Vanguard will be as accurate as the Savage out of the box.  While the Vanguard is a good rifle, it is NOT a Weatherby Mark V, it just carries the Weatherby name.  If it was me I would get the model 110GXP3 and not look back.  Lawdog
 

That is the rifle I got my son.  He loves it.  Get the accutrigger if you buy savage. More money, than the synthetic you described, but worth it.

Voted .30-06 but its a real tossup.  Either will the .270 or the .30-06 will work very well.  The .300 will work, too, but really isn't needed for whitetail at 300 yards.

I bought an 11FC in 30-06 last year and am well pleased with it although I am not a real fan of bolt action guns.  Only thing I don’t care for is the detachable mag.  It looks real cheap, works fine so far but fragile looks worry me.  As I said I am not a fan of bolt guns but am now strongly considering a Stevens 200 in 308.  It won’t do anything the 06 won’t do but I like the idea of the shorter throw.  Then why do I need it, just because!  Have a 308 on my Handi and am having great results at the range with it.  I really should take it deer hunting this year, I may yet, but considering last year’s 8 hot debacle I may need a second shot.  It’s amazing how 7 sprouts can jump up between you and the deer.

Weatherby is range testing Vanguards and those that are really accurate - sub MOA - are creamed off, given a quality synthetic stock and sold as the Vanguard MOA. So, if you want an accurate Vanguard, buy the Vanguard MOA (MSRP is about $800) Everything else is seconds. Or, take your chances on a Savage for much less. I got a closeout stainless/synthetic model 16 .243 for $359 which consistently shoots under 3/4 inch 100 yard bench rest with hot hunting loads. I did nothing to the rifle but adjust the accutrigger to a lighter pull.
