Romney and Mormonism
« on: October 14, 2011, 10:27:35 AM »
I like Mormons - wonderful people.
How many people are aware of Mormon beliefs?  Kind of strange, really.
Church of Latter Day Saints members, your responses welcome!

"(Mormon Bishops daughter)  says Romney believes:
  • He will become a "god" in the afterlife and be given his own planet
  • Satan is Jesus' literal brother
  • Jesus was not born of a virgin
  • He will be given his own afterlife kingdom where he will have sexual relations with his wife, Ann, to populate his kingdom with spirit children as God the Father Himself has a wife on His own planet."

I am a born-again, evangelical Christian and do not share a great deal with Mormons theologically.  Mormons do have decent family values and do use the Bible for moral guidelines...
Besides, we are looking at electing a President...not a Pastor...

If perchance he should get the nomination, you can be sure he will face a lot more bigotry from the left than from the right !
Even orthodox (Biblical) Christians, find that almost 100% of the bigotry they are subjected to, comes from left wing sources..

So I am a Mormon and thought I would chime in for those with questions.

I have never heard anything about The Saviour not being born by a virgin.  And I was a missionary for two in Balitmore, Md.  NOT saying I know it all by any means, but that one is from left field.

The other three bullet points are what we believe.

We do not worship Joseph Smith, nor do we believe that we can get to heaven through him.  Yes we do believe that Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and The Holy Ghost are three separate personages.  Some denominations of Christianity define being Christian by believing that they are all one in the same, but not all do.

If you look up the definition of cult then yeah we are a cult and so is just about every other religion out there.  What is your definition of a cult?

I am not trying to convert anyone or even trying to get anyone to accept me or my beliefs.  Just trying to help clarify any questions yall have.  I have learned a lot from the great people of this forum.  I hope I can finally contribute something worthwhile.

Bring on your questions.  I will try my best to answer them in order and in a timely manner.

Several of my friends are Mormon and I have known and worked (served with) many more.
never saw one try and push their religion on anyone and all I have known were good, hardworking Americans, just trying to get along like everyone else.

There are many reason's I wouldn't vote for Romney. (stated in another post) His Religious beliefs have nothing to do with it.

Thank you.  I'm really just wondering about it. Like nw_hunter I don't care for Romney but it's not Mormonism... I just was struck by this girl's comments and how strange the Mormon tenets are to me.
And since Romney's beliefs are being commented on in the media, etc., I thought we should all get to know more about them.
My sister became a Latter-day Saint before she died (at a relatively young age). we never really got to talk about it much.
I just think it's good to get the beliefs out in the open.
Mormon or Muslim? I guess it depends on the individual. They are both our "neighbors".

I figured with Romney running for President people would be wondering what we believe.  Some may think are beliefs are weird but we just believe in eternal progression.  We believe that we are literal descendants of our Father in Heaven and just as my earthly father was once where I am in my current existence and my son and daughter will some day be at this point, we believe the same applies to us and Heavenly Father.

At least the LDS have an explanation why there are so many habitable planets in the Universe. I've heard of this many years ago and was intrigued.

Didnt mean to high jack this thread, just thought since people are curious about Romney's beliefs and he is running for pres. it would be ok in political forum still.  If we need to move it or start another I am all for it.  I would like to know what powderman has to say.  I figure we dont learn about each other if we cant talk about anything, but dont want to break the rules of forum or get locked.  So mods yalls call.

20 years in the military I had people of all faiths, except Muslim.  Had trouble where a few tried to push their religion off on everyone in the shop, got rid of those people.  It's against the military regulations to do that.  None of those people were LDS.  The LDS were the few people I did not have to worry about, none of them ever got into trouble.  I and the military did not care what religion someone was as long as they did their job, and kept their nose clean.

I feel the same way about the President.  We are not electing a speritial leader, we are electing someone to run the country.  And I don't think Romney will let his religion get in the way.

Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

the mormons DO try to push their religion.  I have plenty of 18 year old "elders" show up on my doorstep where they won't take no for an answer.
I try to politely tell them I have a Church, but finally have to get ugly so they will leave.

IMO that depends on the individual's fervor with his religion. I don't know if JFK ever let his faith be influential in his decisions, his Cardinal was in the WH on a regular basis.

Personally, Mormon doctrines, some of them are counter to what the bible says. Anything that adds or subtracts from the bible is false. Mormons have their own addition to the Bible called the book of mormon. This is a dead give away to the falseness of their doctrine. That being said, I know many good folks of mormon faith, have at it. The constitution prohibits a religious test. That should end the discussion on the political scene. I'm surprised no candidate has brought that up. My problem with Romney is in a lot of ideas he is democratic-lite.

I have known a few mormons and every one was a good person and completely honest. None have ever tried to convert me. This same conversation happened with Kennedy and him being catholic. One of the great things about this country is the freedom to worship as you please. In fact that is THE reason this country is here.

I don't care for Romney but his religious beliefs have nothing to do with it.

I dont think Mormons as a whole are pushy with our religion, but missionaries can be.  If they dont take no for an answer then you do what you need to get them to leave you alone.  It always annoyed me when I would be paired up with a pushy missionary when I was one.  My view was that we are out there to talk to those who WANT to talk to us and when someone said they werent interested I thanked them for their time and didnt bother them again.

But Mormons from Utah and those from every where else are different.  I was born in Texas and raised in Alabama, served a mission in Maryland, married a girl from Wyoming and moved there.  I have met Mormons from all over this Great country and never have I met any that were as arrogant and pushy and rude and self centered and had such a since of entitlement as those that were born and raised in Utah.  It is quite odd.

Since there is such a large concentration of Mormons in Utah that is where most of the missionaries come from, and that is why you get a lot of pushy ones.  I give everyone I meet of any faith or race or state of birth a chance to show me who they are.  And I have met a few good ones in Utah.  But the annoying ones far outweigh the good ones.  And that is why it is a stereotype.

So I beg you, please dont judge all of us by the way Utah Mormons act.

Sorry for the short novel.
