7x57 Mauser?
« on: October 08, 2011, 11:17:37 AM »
This has probably been asked several times, but I couldn't find a good answer.

How would be the best way to get a Handi in the caliber (7x57 mauser)?

Thanks for you patience.

blucollar,

Be very lucky, there are factory 7x57 H&Rs out there, occassionally one will surface in a gunshop or show.  You might be able to rechamber a 7mm-08 barrel to 7x57, check out the link to 4D reamers and the information page lists potential Handi rechambers.  Also could email 4D and ask them.

  I don't think a 7x57 reamer will clean up a 7-08 chamber.

I had the same question , but sorry, that's not the answer. Only way to go is being lucky and finding one for sale or a rebore/rechamber.

 Good luck--woodsrunner

You would have to rechamber a 7mm-08 to the Ackley Improved version of the grand 7X57.  You could have a rebore/rechamber done on a 22 Hornet or 223 barrel.  Maybe even a poor shooting 22-250.  DP

What DP said, 7mm-08 won't work unless you go to an Ackly Improved version of the 7x57, hamm777 just had that done. Factory 7x57(7x64 too) can be had, but they're not common, only made one year or so, there probably aren't a half dozen here on the forum, I have one, and I think Longtom and MSP have one.

I got one too!  Bought it when they came out.  Had to call the factory to find a distributor that had one in stock, put dibs on it immediately.  Still haven't had time to really work with it, but soon, soon!  Goatwhiskers

Tim is correct as usual, I have an original from the factory when they first came out. I had visited the factory a couple of times and had been asking about them making a ML barrel (years ago) and had a nice long conversation with a woman there about how it could easily be accomplised. We kept in touch about my barrels and my other desire, a 7x57 Mauser barrel. A year or so later she called me and asked if I still wanted a 7x57 barrel and I said YES!!! She asked that I send in my reciever and when I did it turned out it was one year to old for them to put a 7x57 barrel on it. SO, being the great CS company they were  she asked I send in my other barrels and they sent me back a newer reciever with  all my barrels AND the new 7x57 barrel fitted to it. It may have been one of the first to come out of the factory. Boy, I miss the good old days..
I am very happy to see there are a few more  7x57 barrels on the site. Congratulations to you all. We could start an H&R  7x57 Mauser club but it woukd be very small....<><....:)

I presume you know that the 7mm08 has more power then the 7x57. I you want to raise the level, have a 7mm-08 rechambered to 284 Win.
I'm not sure that works with a Handi because of the rebated case............... probably not. :-\

Of course you could also just buy a Handi barrel in .280 Remington. The .280 Remington in a Handi is great, but it's still not a 7x57 Mauser....<><.... :)

Loaded to the same pressure, the 7X57 will out do the 7mm-08 due to more case volume.  Next larger case is the 284 Win, (not sure the case volume of the 7X57 AI, but it's not factory) and then the 280 Rem which is one of my favorite rounds.  The 7mm-08 is also an excellent round as is set to take over the "favorite" spot from the 280.  Only about 50 yds difference in MPBR between the 2.  I'm waiting for a bolt gun to arrive that was rechambered to the 7mm-08 AI among other things.  I would like that one to be my "go-to" rifle for a while with all the extra trimmin's I had done.  DP

True, it would be rather small, but it wouldn't be near as small as the 7x64 Brenneke club!!!
Like PHATINJUN, I too would be one of just a handful that belonged to both clubs.

My 7x64 has not been worked with as of yet but will get it's turn in due time.
As for the 7x57, my youngest son (15 now) has laid claim to it a couple of years back.
So far he has shot it a total of 11 times.
Twice on target and 9 at deer with nine kills.
All but one has been bang flops.
I doubt if I ever get that gun back.  ::)

I too have a 7x64 Brenneke, and great shooter it is, even have a full box of the discontinued Federal 160gr Nosler Partitions to go with it, it was one of the first complete Handi rifles I ever bought.

Thanks for all the info, I have considered the 7-08, but just want a 7x57.
The AI might be an option later, but for now I'll try to be patient.
