Two soon to be Glock owners.
« on: August 12, 2011, 04:00:19 AM »
I help teach the handgun carry permit classes in TN through our hunting and fishing club. This past week we held our monthly class and yesterday we went to the range to qualify the students. We furnish Ruger MKII 22lr pistols and ammo for people to qualify with because many that take the class have never shot a pistol before and we tell them to wait until the class is over and we go to the range were we will let them shoot an assortment of handguns to help find the right one for them. Yesterday I was coaching a couple and the wife had never shot before. By the end of our range secession and qualification she had out shot everyone in the class. When the class was over the man and woman said that they had both been given S&W M-36 by a relative. One was a steel frame and the other was an air weight. I told them get them and we would shoot them. They both did pretty well with them single action but the woman really had a hard time just pulling the trigger double action and with the little stock grip it was hard for both to control recoil and get back on target. I let them shoot my revolver with Pachmayr griper grips and they both did much better in single action. The man wanted to shoot my Glock 26 so I let him and he did much better. Then the woman asked to shoot it also. WOW could that gal shoot that Glock. I mean she was cutting bullet holes with it. I taught her how to work the slide and clear it etc. and by the end of our range time she told her husband that she wanted to trade the S&W in on a Glock 26 and he said that is what he was also thinking.   i love my glock 26 i bought it a few months back and now have a little over 400 rounds through it without a single problem yet.  I was out teaching a friend how to shoot handguns a couple days ago.  she had an old 22 magnum revolver that i had given her to at least have something for protection when home alone.  She was keeping her shots in a 3-4 inch group at 10 yds, which to me is minute of home intruder.  after becoming familiar with that one i let her shoot my glock 26 and wow she put 4 rounds right in the bullseye and the others were very close.  with some practice there would be no reason to not have all of them in the bull.  this was with American Eagle 115gr FMJ's too.
I really enjoy teaching others to shoot but the ones who have never done it before really amaze me especially women.  They always seem to stay much more calm and have a steady hand,  plus fewer bad habits.  sorry for such a long post i just wanted to add a similar experience of mine.

I've owned several Glocks over the years, and have said elsewhere that the Glock 23 is the best carrying, and best pointing, pistol for law enforcement in my opinion. I fairly recently gave into age and weight, and sold my Smith 686 2 1/2" that I had customized, and bought a Glock 23. Then after comparing the Model 60 Smith I carried in weight and size to the Glock 27, I sold the Model 60, and bought the Glock 27.
Both Glocks have been fitted with the TrugloTFO sights, which I find amazingly easy to pick up quickely.

The women that we teach usually do shoot better than most men. Part of it is that they learn the correct way to shoot and men have picked up bad habits and are hard to change them. The other reason that women shoot better than most men is because they have a lower center of gravity and thus have a much more stable platform to shoot from. They also get the idea of how to squeeze a trigger by the example that we use. Mothers know how gently and controlled a squeeze has to be to get two drops out of the dropper that you use to give a baby liquid medicine with out getting more than two drops. When you get that concept you get a good smooth trigger squeeze and the shot break will be a surprise and it usually will be in the X ring. I have a G-17 and a G-26 and love them both. Never had a glitch with either and I shoot mostly reloads. I put and adjustable back sight on both because fixed sights always shoot low for me with my preferred bullet weight. For self defense in the 9mm I like 115 gr XTP or Gold Dot and I load the Montana Gold 115 JHP bullet to shoot the same velocity and POI. By the way the Montana Gold JHPs are not like real JHPs. The jacket will rip off in little strips and the lead core keeps on trucking like a regular lead bullet. I tested them against the XTP and Gold Dot. When shooting into 2 1/2 Gal liquid laundry soap jugs filled with water the XTP and Gold Dot would go through one jug and be found inside the second with text book mushrooms. The Montana Gold bullet left the jacket in little slivers in the first jug and the core went through all five jugs I had stacked together in a row and kept on going into the bank back stop. They are very accurate bullets and have a great price for a jacketed bullet and they look just like the Hornady XTP 115 gr bullet. 6 grs Unique is really accurate and powerful.
