Pawn Shop Tour
« on: April 01, 2011, 01:34:18 PM »
I went to a bunch of pawn shops today and saw some stuff I wanted.  An older 572 Fieldmaster for $175.00.  A 552 Speedmaster for $225.00.  A nearly perfect 1960s 700ADL with a nice Elpaso Weaver K-4 in vintage Weaver tip-offs for $500.00.  An 1100 that needed some work for $225.00.  I may try to get that 572.

The Model 700 would suit me just fine as my only deer rifle.  It was nice.

When dealing with the pawn shop,
they probably paid 50 to 75.00 for the 22 rifle.  More likely less than the $50.
Having watched my old roomate deal with pawn shops for years in Norfolk, and he was good.
First thig is talk to the manager, not a sales clerk.  They will stick full retail on items.  So that 175 is probably  95 to 100% condition in the Blue book.
second is walk in with Cash.  Have it in your hand and lay it on the counter.
Ask to see the rifle.
offer about 125 for the gun and have about 140 in your hand.  Helps to make it easy for the them and have three bills ($100 Bill and 2 -20's) not 7- 20's.
They will say no and the hangle is on.
come up to 130 or go all in with the 140 out the door.
If and, more likely when he says no.  He will say maybe we can help you with something else, Say no, I will look else where for Remington 22. Gather up the $ from the counter, hold it in your hand and walk to the door.  He will stop you with a number, there is no way he wants that C note to walk out his door.
The other guys at the counter will let you walk, you need a manager or better, the owner for this to work.
Also works with jewelery especally after Christmas and vallentines day.

I was at several pawn shops in the Bradenton, Fl area last month.  Every gun, and I do mean every gun was overpriced, as was the fishing equipment.  I bought an older Canon Powershot S70 digital camera for $30.00 "as is" since it was not working at the time.  It worked out that the batteries needed recharging and the charger that they were using didn't work.  I took a chance and it payed off.  I had the right charger at home and now I have a nice camera and 2 spare batteries.  It was marked $100, and when I asked what they would take sincer I was taking a risk, the manager said they paid $25 for it and would let it go for $30.  I bet the guns had a similar markup (over 300%)!

The WORST thing you can do is make a offer that is rediculas LOW as most people behind the counter will just turn off, remember the pawn shop owner has his money working for him and it has to make him money, we LOVE the experts to come in that think they know what is invested in a particular item, we try to maintain a clean and friendly shop always open to offers but if and when they get to silly we just dont move at all, williamlayton is that correct or not?   Jim

I usually just ask "what's the best you can do".  If it's too much, I'll wince a little and counter offer.

One of the local pawn shops here can be all over the board. Most stuff IMHO is overpriced. I have tried to haggle on a couple guns with no luck. But then at the same place I walked in one day and there was a 95%+ Bulgarian Mak in 9x18 with an asking price of $125. I got it for $115 out the door tax and all. The clerk said he thought he should warn me it was so cheap because it is very difficult to get ammo for it (LOL).

Today I saw a pretty nice corn cob forend 16 gauge 870 for $180.00 and a nice J.C. Higgins marked Marlin 336 with a walnut stock for $250.00.

I bought the very clean & very eary Model 700 ADL in .30-06 with an Elpaso made K4 in Elpaso low mounts.  He came down a little.

My local pawnshop is also the only place that sells powder and primers for reloading.  This week I went in to pick up a pound of lil gun and saw a lightly used Stihl 044 Chainsaw with a $175 sticker on it.  Asked the owner if it ran and we cranked it, it fired on the second pull, offered him $150 out the door and went home with a nice saw, my powder and a set of Lee collet .243 dies that i didn't really need but for $10 what the heck.  ;D   Gotta love pawn shopping  BTW everything is negotiable!!

I think the Obummer scare is still affecting firearms prices and anybody selling guns knows it. You might get a good deal on a chainsaw, but I haven't seen a good deal on a used gun since he was elected.
