Which is the best Remington 760 or 7600 ?

Hi,I am going to get a Remington pump Rifle and am curious which one to get.
Do I need to find an older 760 or get one of the newer 7600 rifles?
ARE parts available for the older 760 rifles in case I would have problems with it ?
also curious as to whether shorter cartridges would have any advantage over the longer ones IE would a 308 for instance have a shorter action stroke than a 30-06 ?Does the shorter catridges feed better or worse or is that a non issue in the Remington pumps?
I am also thinking i might like to rebarrel to 8mm Mauser just to have something different and because I like and reload for the cartridge BUT that is not set in stone.

     I prefer the 760 , I think they are smoother and have better triggers .  There is only one action length  , so there is no mechanical advantage to a short Cartridge in the pumps .  If you want a Thumper, get a late model 760 in .35 Rem. and have it rechambered to .358 Win. or .35 Whelen . I have one in .358 and it is sweeeet  !

IMHO the 760's were built a bit better but the early 7600's are about the same. Check when the time frame is folks started complaining about Remington's quality sliding and go by that if looking at 7600's.

    Whichever model doesn't need electrician's tape wrapped around the forend to keep it from rattling and clattering while deer hunting.

My Model Six( made after the 760's and before most 7600's) is an outstanding rifle. Very accurate, reliable and quite smooth. I think part of the smoothness of the typical 760 is due to the youngest being at least 30 years old and has probably been cycled a bazillion times. That kind of thing will smooth up a couple cinder blocks too! Anyway... I think the fewer, larger locking lugs of the Model 6/7600 series is a better design. How many of those smaller lugs on the 760's actually bear on their locking shoulders? I like the non-riveted extractors as you ( generally) wont need a gunsmith to replace the odd broke one. I do prefer the all steel 760 magazines though. The plastic bottomed 7600's work just fine in my rifle but carry poorly due to their bulkier bottom. Triggers are a dog fall. Time and use improves them. The larger magazine catch of the 7600's is very nice. The design of the action bars is alittle stronger in the 7600's ( less chance of seperation). The firing pin is stronger in the 7600's and is spring loaded. The 760's are not . An important thing to consider is while the 760/7600's are rugged rifles, any parts replacement is likely to be with used parts. Parts for a 7600 will be new.

     Which ever one you get Brian , do yourself a big favor and install the Patriot sear Spring .  I just put them into two of my 760s and it makes quite an improvement in trigger pull weight . Especially since they only cost $9.99 . If you Google Barnes Gun Parts you'll find them .             Mike

  Do the new springs need installed by a Gunsmith?? Or, can it be done by somebody that opening a Can is a challenge, namely me!!!!

                   You push out the two pins holding the Trigger Group and remove .  It's the spring on top, just remove and replace . It comes with directions and Pictures , anybody that can't handle this little job , probably shouldn't own firearms !
