I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the 308.  It is available in about any rifle you want.  It has plenty of power for anything up to elk with the right bullets.  It has a long tradition for target shooting and is a top choice of the police and military.  Ammo is cheap and available almost everywhere.  It can be loaded down to less that 30-30 or with Light magnum loads from Hornady, Federal pushes the 300 H&H.  It has everything going for it but glamor.  On the other hand I am partial to the 257 Ackley Improved.

Good luck in your choice.

You beat me to it.  The .308 cartridge is known for its accuracy and is extremely versatile.  Was at the range last weekend busting clay pigeons at 300 with mine.

FWIW, my favorite bolt gun is my .257 Roberts.  But the .308 is probably the best choice for a young lad with limited funds, doesn’t reload and has the desire to shoot a lot.

I'm gonna show my nephew how to shoot a 270 Win. He is 14 a big boy.
I'll take him to the range soon and go thru the proper way to handle and shoot my 270. I thought about maybe the 257 WBY but the 270 has a little more recoil that I know he can handle. :D

Well this thing is getting some new life. Guess I'll give an opinion on cartridge's.

One is all but dead and may pose a problem with ammo, that's the 250-3000. American's are so consumed with speed and power that we've let some of the best go away. With the 250-3000 pretty much gone, the next choice would be the 260 Rem. Again, how long will it last? Not real fast nor even real powerfull, just does the job without a lot of fuss.

I think that this starter issue could be pretty well summed up to use anything you want that's made on the 308 Win case. And I might add, with danger of being whipped by many, has a factory load of at least 120 gr avaliable.
 Even a blind squrrel find's an acorn sometime's![/quote]

I would go with either a 6.5x55 swede or a .308.  The swede is very accurate and has a reputation as a great hunting round in Scandanavian countries.(starting to catch on here)  The .308 has a tremendous history of accuracy and is a great hunting round.  If you are going to reload, it's a toss up.  If you are going with factory ammo(no plans to reload in the future) go with the .308
