Up close
« on: January 20, 2011, 04:01:32 PM »
I was deer hunting from the ground this weekend and had a yote walk right up to me.  When I shot him he was about 12 feet and I don't think he ever knew I was there!

Very healthy looking...other than a big hole!

I really don't think he ever knew I was there.  I was in one of heater body suits and was about laying flat leaned up against a tree.  He was in my lap before I saw him.  I raised up, unzipped the bag, and picked up the rifle and shot.  All this within 15 feet!  It was all kinda crazy but I guess these things happen sometimes.

I have heard of them doing this..but never to me.. :D    When you said he had a big hole, I was about to ask what caliber of rifle you shot him with.
At that distance though, caliber wouldn't mean a lot...he's going to have a big hole anyway. :D ;D

"Self Defense", that is a good one.

Rd,
Funny how people think and while this may be true in some areas it has no issue with deer here.  I can't remember how many times I have shot and have a deer come by within minutes.  I have also watched deer when someone shot really close and the deer never reacted in any way.  I think it takes more than sound of gun fire to spook a deer.

A dead coyote is one less fawn killer to me. If you use
a big enough gun, you don't have to mess with skinning
the critter.

Yotes have priority when we deer hunt. Between me and two other guys we got six deer and three yotes. One just sat there looking at me the other one didn't know I was there.

More than once I've been gutting a deer and looked up to see deer watching me work.Don't think they're bothered as much as we are.

Was out varmit calling last spring.  We were sitting out in the sun and enjoying the warm sunshine.  My partner was enjoying the warth too much.  He was sitting leaning against a tree about 15ft from me, and he fell asleep.  Had a Coyote coming in and I was watching him.  Coyote stopped out about 35 yards behind a bush.  Wanted to move him so I reached down and squeeked a mouse squeaker.   Caught movement out of the corner of my eye and turned.  A Coyote went vering off in nfront of me, as my partner started screaming and trying to get up.  When I squeeked the mouse squeeker, this Coyote could not see my hand move behind a small bush, but it thought a mouse was there and used my partner's belly as a spring point to get to the mouse.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
