what kind of gun do you use for your trap line?

thinking of getting a new gun to trap with only
leaning to a pistol 4 or 6in. 22/22mag

I use a .22 revolver,while it is a convertible--I never put in the mag cylinder. I use mainly .22 shorts for dispatch.

i also use a 22 pistol--it will shoot shorts--longs -long rifle-carry it in a shoulder holster--believe me thats all you need

both- a pistol for coons, etc

a rifle for coyotes- because I like shooting them from 20-30 feet, and I want 1 shot to kill 99.9% of them- I don't have that skill with a pistol

a rifle for skunks as well- I shoot in lungs (avoids spraying very well) and again, don't have that pinpoint accuracy with my pistol

why 20 to 30 feet away? i use a rifel on coyotes cause here you have to buy an extra tag to use a pistol i use 22 shorts.only thing i shoot with a gun is coyotes .

I use a Ruger Single Six revolver SS 5.5" barrel. I walk most of my line and with all the other gear you need to make/remake sets plus any animals you catch the rifle just gets in the way for me. I have been really happy with the Ruger, it is accurate enough that you don't have to worry about being able to hit what you are shooting at if you do your part and the ability to shoot S,LR or cbs without having to single load them is nice as well. I usually carry it loaded with 22 LR HP in case I get the opportunity for a bonus take while I am checking my traps, it happens often enough to make it worthwhile, and then switch to shorts or cbs for the actual dispatch except for coyotes where I use the LRs. Oh and I do this by carrying the first two rounds as LR and then load the other 4 shorts or cbs and just cycle past the LR when I need the others. It sounds more complicated than it really is when your are actually doing it.

great good reason to get a new gun
now i have a few of those boxes of those bulk hp .22
they should work fine right ? i dont have to buy more shells do i ? the shorts and cbs are pricey arent they i never realy looked at them but will have to check on them
i thought i read somewhere that the hps are not good for trapping but im hoping im reading into it to much

ill be asking all kind of stupid ?s im sure please bear with me

No yotes yet . Some here sell fox to training pens and they use a noose on a pole to get them out the trap and into a cage. Bobcat gets a 22.

I used to carry my Browning 22 pistol for years becasue it was all I had. Some years back I decided I didn't like how much beating my expensive Browning was taken. So I bought a Heritage Rough Rider 22 pistol. Yep it's cheap and I'll probably break it at some point, but if I have to use the butt to drive a nail or drop it in the mud. I'm not going to feel bad about it. I also like that it has a 22mag cylinder, back when I trapped some yotes and was saving skulls. A body shot them with the 22 mag hollow point and put them down pretty quick.

i had a rough rider sold it dont want another and i looked at the plinkertons dont want one of them either so im looking at some h&rs they are good guns and dont cost as much as ruger but im still looking might find a good beater ruger for a good price wish i could use my 22/45 ruger very good gun 4in. bull would be nice but we cant use semis in pa dont make sence but its the rules for now wish we could but as uncle ted says we as a state are to stupid to use semis cracks me up but i guess we are because we as a whole dont call every day to bug them to change the laws or resign thats how he put it in altoona i went to see him he tells it like it is

B44mag, I have never had a 22 hp exit a Coyote so there was no fur damage at all. I use the shorts and cbs only on land caught coon. These are the only two animals I shoot in a trap. As far as the cost goes, I don't know what they sell for in your area but they are about 50 cents a hundred more expensive than LR around here so the cost difference is really insignificant especially when you consider that gas is over 3 dollars a gallon now and 100 cbs or shorts will last a lot longer than a gallon of gas.

yea leo if you look at it like that the shorts and cbs arent that much more i will use the hps till they are gone i have bunches so i think that will be what i use my stock of 22 hps should outlast me im sure

Try to shoot the coyotes so the bullet travels in line with its neck. That way there is no pass through. I use an old Iver Johnson 8 shot 22 and it works well with whatever type of 22 I put in it. I use standard 22 LR ammo.

I think I will find one of the little "chipmonk" rifles. They are small, would fit in a bucket or whatever you carry traps, lure, etc...in. They could be used like a pistol or rifle (although the lop is very short) and might be easier to aim. I don't like my pistol under my coveralls not do I like how cumbersome a full size rifle is.

i saw a cricket pistol with thumbhole for i think 225 maybe that will work need to replace the trigger guard its pretty small for big fingers ill have to go look at them again might be the ticket on a over head opsite shoulder sling my wheels are turning

because at 20-30 feet away, the coyote isn't jumping around as much- its just easier and quicker for me to shoot a standing coyote looking at you, then one jacking and jumping-

most of the ones i catch which is not a whole lot they just hump up and dont jump at all they are jumping when i pull up but they usually stop when i get close i got a pic of one with my old ladys dog bout a 5 lb shizoo nose to nose with one when i get my desktop hooked up ill post it.

I've had a couple of cheap H&R revolvers with 2" barrels and couldn't hit a darn thing with them. I carry a Browning Micro Buckmark in a custom flap holster and hand load shorts. It's also once reblued due to wear.

Like many of you I have the opportunity to shoot small edibles at times and cheapo wheel guns just don't cut it.

Also I have a buddy that has a cheapo German Bear Cub revolver that groups around 1" at 12 yards...

On land I use a Ruger Super Single Six .22 but on the water I'll use my Henry lever action .22
