375 JDJ vs. 375 Win whats the main difference
« on: December 16, 2003, 04:47:32 PM »
After chasing through countless posts on this site, I think I am leaning towards the 375 JDJ for my 2nd Encore barrel, to compliment the 308 I already have.
But what is the main difference in ballistics between the 375 JDJ and the 375 Win?

Thanks,

Kevin

Ok, now i've gone and done it.  I went looking through some old reviews on Hangun Hunter.com, and found a comparison and review of the 376 Steyr on the Encore pistol.
From what ballistics they showed from their testing, it shoots flatter than the 375 JDJ.
HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm getting a headache.
I just want one big bore barrel, but still want a 200 yard gun.
Any thoughts on any of this ?

Kevin

If you want a big bore, go with the .444 Marlin. I've had very good results with mine. From a 15" bbl.....16 1/8" with Muzzle Tamer I've got sub-moa
groups with medium loads and top speed so far 2,300 fps from 250gr with no pressure signs . Truelly a good choice.

I spoke with JD regarding the .375 JDJ in the encore.  He told me this will take the cartridge to a new level in performance.  The cases are easy to make.  When combined with the .308, there is nothing in the world you can not successfully hunt and bring to bag.

I have a similar set-up with both the .309 and .375 JDJs in the Contender.

I'll go thumbs up for the JDJ's on the Contender also.   Lighter/smaller frame works better for me out in the field than the Encore, but yet still handles wildcats that get the job done.   Have or had 257, 6.5, 309, 358, 338#2 and 375 JDJ's, multiple barrels of 3 of these choices, and I keep going back to the 309 and 375 that will reliably take anything the walks the earth.   Yep, even shot squirrels with the 375's (not good for the pot though   ).   And if your ability is there, don't limit either of them to only 200 yards - they're deadly well beyond that range.
Just another opinion,

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

According to Hornady 5 edition.

375 Win can push a 220 gr. bullet to 1950 fps out of a 14"Contender  barrel

375 JDJ can push a 220 gr. bullet to 2200 fps out of a 14"Contender  barrel

375 JDJ can push a 300 gr. bullet to 1900 fps out of a 14"Contender  barrel

I would assume if it was chambered in the Encore you could beat those numers by reloading.

I was going to say that the 375 JDJ is a wildcat, but it is no longer a wildcat as Hornady will be making ammo and T/C will be distributing it.

Hi folks,

I look at the 250fps between the two and I have to ask...is there a terminal ballistic difference between the two within normal hunting ranges?  In other words, does that 250fps really amount to a REAL difference between the two?

Thanks for constructive feedback.

I say the .375JDJ, maybe because I have one...

I have been playing with different bullets and powders for my .375JDJ in 14". My favorite to shoot is the 220grn Hornady flat point. I'm shooting it a 2015fps. It is a good 200 yd bullet and gun combo. I shot some of the bullets into wet phone books and after digging them out of the sand on the back side, what a cannon. The bullets were the size of a nickel.
I'm working on a load for the 260 & 270 grn bullets but haven't been to the range yet. The dies may be a bit more but I think you will like this round.
Like another said, with my 309JDJ and my .375JDJ, I'm covered, even If I cross the great waters and hunt some dangerous critters.
The .375JDJ sures makes for coversation at the range when it's busy.

Three different cartridges the .375 Winchester, .375 JDJ and the .376 Steyr.  All would work fine in an Encore.  I would lean toward the .375 JDJ simply because I have one all ready and like the way it works.  Mine is a 20" carbine barrel, and from what I can tell the ballistics for it and the .376 Steyr are probably within a 100 fps or so.  I have been shooting the 260gr. BT up around 2400 fps.  I'm not sure how much more power one really needs, but that is more then enough for anything I am likely to encounter! :)
