Author Topic: 223 vs 270 Hand loads (Read 2068 times)

I purchased a 223 bull barrel a while ago. To replace a Rossi 17 HMR. I liked the upgrade. I purchased a 270 H&R barrel a little while ago, to replace the Rossi 270 barrel. I built/had made a 45/70 muzzleloader to replace the 50 cal Rossi barrel. I am entirely satisfied with these upgrades. I am a Handi-holic. I don't shoot the 223 anymore. The 270 does everything the 223 did and better. 90g bullets Trailboss, same. I am a hunter not a paper cutter. Shoot at the range to site and chrono. Should I sell the 223? I have the dias for 270 and 223. The 223 seems to be a waist of effort. I really like the 270 with reduced loads, Full power loads with 170g bullets work well also. Large Limb-saver, Choiti survivor stocks, No recoil issues. And deadly accurate. I need to recover from my affliction. Advice?

You have to keep the 223 barrel or you will never catch up to Quick and Longtom.

I have .223, .22-250 and 7mm-08 Handis. Patty has a .270. I haven't gotten the .22-250 where I want it as yet, but the others are tack drivers. I wouldn't part with any of them. And, yes, the the economy part of the .223 is very nice.

Patty shoots a lot of 90 grainers out of the .270, poping chucks out to 400 yards. I wish I could do that

In short, I woudn't get rid of anything. Time after time folks post here they wish they hadn't.

Keep the .223 as a backup so long as it shoots good and fits. The $100 or less that you net out of the sale won't buy that much shooting. Not much that can go wrong but even if the scope goes south in the middle of a hunt, you have options.

Ditto, keep the .223 as back up. I am always having friends or relativews show up that want to go hunting. Good thing I always have extra guns around.

I agree with Sourdough. I'm running out of room for "extra rifles", but I still keep getting them. I just bought a Handi .45-70/.30-30 combo on Gunbroker, and thought to sell the barrels and keep the wood and frame. Well I just had a windfall, 3500 bucks for a wildlife management select cut on my place, so the .45-70 will become a 90, 110 or a 120 and the .30-30 will be a shortie truck gun. Patty, make room in the bed. Gotta have a place to stash these.

You haven't lived until you have reamed a new chamber by yourself!

45-90 brass is cheaper than the longer ones, but the 45-120 cartridge looks really COOL. I am not biased.

How did a thread on the 223 vs. 270 end up discussing extractor modifications, barrel bobbing and 45 cal. rechambers?

Yeah, a loaded round of .45-120 is for sure an eye grabber. It looks like something out of Darkest Africa, towing a dead elephant behind it. It might be fun to do. I'll let Patty shoot it first

The same way any thread evolves. So far no one has actually made any comparisons of the two except the OP, so everyone is more or less off topic concerning the subject, but the question asked was to sell the 223 or not. The simple answer has been mentioned before, a true Handiholic doesn't sell anything unless it's a duplicate of something they already have, even that doesn't apply as many here have several of some chamberings, minimizing the collection to that which will suit the needs of a shooter/hunter is unhandiholic.

go with the 225 Winnie. I had one about 40 years ago--OMG, what a chuck buster and easy to convert 30-30 cases to it. have the throat reamed out to use a longer neck than normal for heavier slugs, after all it's a single shot (made in Heaven). Blessed day to all.

Ok I am in a simulair situation... my Model70-270 nails everything I like....deer to groundhog... Though My 223 Ultra has been a standby for several years... Guess I need to hold on to them both, even though my RemXR-308 is top dog

Wow..so I guess it's official now that Tim said it..Since I have sold many of mine in my life and just recently sold my last one here,that I'm no longer a handiholic...nor have ever been one

No offense, but selling all the barrels that you had including the custom 30-06 Handi you waited so long for, and then buying a bolt gun sure sounds very unHandiholic to me, so if the shoe fits.....

Why...just because I don't elect to keep them for very long as you or others that collect them..? I needed and wanted a magnum this year..and since you can't get one like my Weatherby in a Handi platform I sold what I had to to get it..I've spent a bunch of $$$ on them and have owned 31 so far,not counting having the 3 full blown re-bore jobs by Wayne done but even still..that makes it unhandiholic in your view ehh...Ok..Thanks

We are enrolled in a forest management/conservation program. The select cut was a logging operation to remove climax growth trees, diseased trees and trees that were undesireable encroaching on better trees. It opens up the forest, lets light in and promotes secondary growth which is browse for deer, hare, and others and offers shelter and food for birds and smaller critters.

Pete, I am curious or is that nosey. How many acres did you have cut? I had 8 acres done behind the house i use to live in. Mostly oak. I got $10,000 for it. Sure was a lot of deer in there after that. Lots of black berry briars too.

My suggestion is to keep the 270 and sell the 223 ( a good place is to sell is in the Handi Classifieds here). At the risk of being tarred and feathered , I will go on the record and sat There is nothing wrong with being a 1 Center fire owner

Our forefathers created and developed this country with a single shot rifle and maybe if they had the money a shotgun.
Also for the record I am not a single firearm owner and hope that I never am placed in that position .

Unfortunately, in today's economy, financial hardship certainly takes its toll on being a Handiholic, I realize that minimizing isn't always unhandiholic, we do what we have to.

Keep your .223. 4 grains of trail boss and a 34 grain midsouth .08 a pop bullet equals alot of fun quiet plinking, that will replace your .22.

My final decision is to keep the 223. I like the 270 trailboss loads but way to much powder and brass and bullets to plink and cut paper. I only fired my old one about 5 times a year. 4 to check the scope and one to kill a critter. I will try the 223 trailboss loads also. But here is my 270 plinker, uses nail gun cartridges, 85 feet MOA. Sounds like a 22 short.

Neat gizmo. Emailed the guy for a quote. I've also been looking at a .22 LR converter for the .45-70 government, but the system seemed a little bit of a pain with the separate firing cap and having to use a stick to push it out etc.
