first shot always high ?
« on: July 05, 2010, 11:42:46 AM »
I have a new 357mag NEF that seems to shoot the first shot high 2 to 4 inches and some times the next one or two shots will be a little lower till I'm back on my zero mark I'm zeroed at 75 yards with 158g JHP
The first shot when hunting is the one that counts
Is there anything I can do to fix this ? zero my gun for the first shot ? Shoot low on the first shot ?

Are you cleaning the bore after each use? If so  try not cleaning it so often most rifles are more accurate with a "fouled " barrel. clean it only after bad weather or accuracy goes down. Then remember to fire a "fouling " shot  before shooting for group or hunting. Also, How many rounds do you have shot thru the barrel. It may still be in the break in period.

Jeeps got it right.....don't keep cleaning the danged thing.  If you want consistent shooting, let it get a little cruddy.

I don't know how many rounds I have fired. less than 100. How many does it take to brake in a new barrel?
Cleaning I just run a dry patch threw it .

Throw away the dry patch.  At less than 100 rounds, it isn't even cruddy enough to get tight.  I think the JHPs will keep the bore just right if ya leave it alone.

I have several rifles that typically will throw the first round 2" high (100yds) on the first shot; then they settle in.

I have one load for one rifle that shoots 3" to the right (100 yds) on the first shot.

Hmmmm.

I watch two or three folks at the range over the years that will shoot one round every 10-15 MINUTES - to shoot from a 'cold' bore.

High usually means it is slower (believe it or not) so don't leave even a hint of oil or cleaning solvent in the barrel, run 3 dry patches through it before you shoot and see how that works.  Larry

I am also one that believes in leaving them dirty until the accuratcy starts to fall off.
Then you can clean it, but most likely you will need to foul the barrel with a couple of shots to get it back to POA.
Each caliber/barrel is different in how many rounds it takes.
I have some that only takes 20 to 30 rounds and others have over 100 before they start to shoot badly.
You just have to learn what you barrel likes.
