Firing pins sizes
« on: May 30, 2010, 11:10:01 AM »
I have three frames, all SB2 (skeletonized). All three of them have different firing pin protrusion lengths and one has a different firing pin diameter.  Did someone make changes to the odd ball? Any problems forseen?

frame #1  diameter= .075"  protusion= .056" *well used*
frame #2  diameter= .059"  protusion= .035"  *never had a barrel fitted to it yet*
frame #3  diameter= .064"  protusion= .045"  *currently being used for my finicky .223* http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,205716.0.html

Thanks, Dinny

Is that big one a shotgun frame with the larger dia pin?  I would keep that one for shotgun barrels or low pressure rounds anyway.

The difference in the other two could be just production tolerance...0.005" isn't much to worry about in this case.

Protrusion doesn't cause the redazz as long as it fires the primer AND/OR doesn't poke a hole.  :o >:( ;D

Dinny,
Using the frame that I use for the .223 I bought from you, the pin diameter is .063". The pin protrusion varies depending on how you measure it.
1. With the hammer pressure on the transfer bar it sticks out .046"
2. With finger pressure directly on the transfer bar it sticks out .062"
3. Pushing the pin in by itself, it will travel quite a bit farther before it hits the beveled part of the pin inside the frame.

FWIW this is the SB-2 frame for my .270 Ultra Comp
The dimensions are very close to the same on my SB-1 .357 Mag. Synthetic
Hope this helps!

*  the pin diameter is .063". (same)
1. With the hammer pressure on the transfer bar it sticks out .052
2. With finger pressure directly on the transfer bar it sticks out .065

Nope, it's a SB2 rifle frame that I bought here used.

Thanks, Dinny

Strange...that is a BIG firing pin for ANY rifle.

To check the MAXIMUM protrusion you need to use a punch slightly smaller than the firing pin hole, push the pin in as far as it will go, THEN measure the protrusion.

Inertia acts on the pin a bit when the hammer hits it so it can go beyond what the transfer bar allows...when the spring binds it stops the progress of the pin along with hitting the primer.
