Barrel fit slop

Brownells sells replacement hinge pin sets for single barrel shotguns that you drive out the old pin, ream a tapered hole with the barrel clamped in place, then drive in a tapered pin and dress off the outside ends.  Without worrying about the possible problems with refinishing, would this work with rifle barrels on the Handi as opposed to the shimming procedure?  Just curious.  Goatwhiskers the Elder

I can see a potential problem in keeping the barrel straight and square with proper headspace at the breech, etc. I should think that short of having the right jigs to maintain the relationship of the action and barrel that this could be an iffy procedure.
That said, Ive never tried it. It might be worth a go on a 'real beater' of a piece to get through the learning curve.

It would probably work using some JB weld to hold everything in place, and clamped together, using a good release agent to keep the moving parts from sticking together before the removal, and install of the pin.

Why not?   It's not like you'd be out a lot of money, and if things didn't go according to plan you have extra parts and a garden stake, or barrel someone might use for a stub project.

I think I see a problem here.  When we fit extra barrels we are adapting each one to fit a basically unaltered frame so all will interchange without problems.  This procedure I asked about uses a tapered reamer and new pin to fit to your existing frame, then any other barrels you have won't fit correctly and I think the chances of achieving the exact same fit on any other barrel pivot points would be chancy.  Maybe using a stop collar on the reamer might work to keep from enlarging the frame pin hole.  Anyway, it was a good idea for a while.  Goatwhiskers the Elder

Yes, the taper reamer will also taper the barrel underlug, as barrel and action need to be done together. It needs to taper fully to the 'off side ' (the smaller dia) and ream the action hole there a tad to have a full fit and thus do the job intended. You couldnt fit other barrels to this without a lot of hand fitting to the new taper pin, as trying to set another barrel in the action and running in the reamer again will not only cut the new barrel underlug, but the forward side of the action holes oblong.
