so my Mad Max project is almost complete
« on: March 13, 2010, 06:53:13 PM »
Today I picked up and or ordered the finishing touches for my Mad Max Contender. I have had the frame for a couple of year but decides that I wanted to get into handgun hunting. So I decided that I wanted to start out with something fairly mild and work my way into it. I choose a .357 Maximum. Now my dad wasn't really sure about it at first, but once I told him that I was going to borrow a reamer and "fix" my 10" .357 mag barrel, he told me that if I could find a Factory barrel he would buy it and trade it to me for my 10" mag barrel.
Great news for me, bad news for him. A gentleman that is a regular at our local gun show, here in Topeka, Ks, used to have one all the time. So all I had to do was wait for two weeks. The was a show coming up in Kansas City, so I talked Dad into driving over to check it out. Mr. K.A. Thomas of The T/C Shop, just happened to be there. And what did he still have. A beautiful 12" .357 Maximum Hunter barrel. My dad paid him the asking price of $175, and I came on of the deal smelling like roses. So we get back to his place, load up a handfull of rounds, swap barrels out and head for the farm to do a little shooting.
Needless to say, I'm in love. The barrel having no sights I had to barrel sight everything. Hit a pepsi can at ten yard(cheating I know but had to make sure it would go off). So I decided to stratch the range a little. I set a 1 liter pepsi bottle on a tree stump at about 65 yards. Barrel sighting and with three sighters I hit the pepsi bottle. Now it was time to get everything else that I had to have.
This morning I got up and ordered a Pachmayr Gripper grip off the net for $55. Then later, at the show I picked up a 2x7-32 NcStar illuminadated reticle pistol scope for $80 and a set of LeopoldDual dovetail rings and base for $25. So ran home at put it all together. Now here is the problem. The objective on the scope is so close to the hammer that I have to use both thumbs to cock the hammer. Do I buy an aluminum hammer spur extention for $20 or a taller set of rings for $30. I'm into this setup for about $335 and am trying to do things on a budget since I have a wife and 23 month old daughter that already takes all of my money. What should I do? I havd to replace the hammer spring shortly after I got the gun and was told that Hammer spurs are the cause for this. Thanks for any input and hopefully I will be able to keep you guys updated as this project progresses.

You might be able to slide the scope back (towards you) a little bit to give you more clearance.  You might have to "refocus" the scope to your arm's lenght.  Worth a try.

All of my scoped Contenders are pretty close also, about like the one pictured above.

doc-and,

If you can't find your extension let me know. I think I have one also buried somewhere in my shop I can track down. I'll send him mine for free also.

In My opinion hammer spurs get a bad rap, I have used them for years on all my contender and encore with scopes and have never had a problem with them. Even marlin rifles come with one when you buy a new one and they are made of steel. All my scoped Marlins have them installed with never a problem. There is a fellow on ebay that sell an aluminum one that slides over hammer and it is designed to be used left or right with out changing, it is vey light and well made. Yes I know others have had a problem. Guess I am just lucky.

I can't move the scope back any further, maybe an 1/8". The problem lies in that the eyepiece end of the scope is about 3 and a 1/4" long which is what is making it hard to get a good purchase on the hammer trying to cock it. That is part of the reason that I thought that I would go to taller rings. But if you guys say that the hammer extensions aren't as big of a problem as I've heard I will try one.

When I got my 1975 made frame it had a hammer spur on it and I have used it for years with no problems. Mine is sticking out on the left side of the hammer so while you a gripping the pistol your thumb just reaches up and cocks the hammer without changing your grip like you have to do if you place the spur on the right side of the hammer.

I had a hammer extension on my Contender at one time.  I got several "clinkers" and took it off.  Come to find out, it was just that my pistol didn't want to crack CCI Large Rifle primers.  I gave the hammer extension away before I discovered this, but I havn't needed it since.

Heck I'd give it a try, if it works, it works.  Just get some good bench time in to be sure that it works ok before you go out on a big hunt with your Contender.

One step closer to being complete. A guy at work happened to have a hammer extension laying around that he bought for a marlin a few years ago. He never used it as the package it was in said it was for a Contender. Also thinks that he has some Butler Creek flip-up scope covers that will work. I told him that if they would all fit I would give him $20. He said that if it would all fit that I could have it. So now I'm just waiting on my grip to get here and Mad Max will be complete. Hoping to get the press fired up Wednsday night and roll on some ammo.

The first big hunt will be in December for our firearms deer season. And I guarantee that I will have practiced quite a bit by then. This shooting a handgun thing is still a little new to me so I'm am going to make sure that when the time comes I am 100% ready.

Finally. He's done. Pachymer Gripper got here Friday morning. Guy at work finally came through on his promise and brought me the hammer extension and scope covers. Hammer extension is an aluninum Stratton Custom, which I had todo a little modifying on to get it to fit my frame. The Scope covers will work I think. Front fits great, rear is really only getting good tension off of the focus lock ring. Might have to get a different rear at some point down the road. But for right now I'm thrilled just to have it done. Since I didn't get anything done this last wensday, as my best freind's wife gave birth to their first child, beautiful little girl, I am going to try and get a little bit of food loaded up for Max, so maybe I can go feed him this weekend. As soon as I can get some pictures taken and have the wife help me load them onto the computer, I will post them for everybody to see.

Now I think that it's time to start planning for his brother, Masterblaster, in .445 Super Mag. But something tells me that is going to be a little ways off. Unless I run into some money the wife doesn't know about. Then its on.
