Handi rest/bipod for Pronghorn?
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:14:14 PM »
Hello I know from hunting with my handis that this is true...
"3. Place the front rest just ahead of the trigger guard under the hinge, if you push the guard right into the front rest, it will be in the same position each time. On my rest, the rear sling stud is also against the rear rest." -From the stickies.
Here is my delema, the only bi-pods I have ever seen hook to the front sling swivel. and shooting from a day pack, may or may not sit just right under the hinge ( might be fine, just trying to plan out all the kinks before hand.) Do any of you have a home made rest for Handi hunting that may be simple? How did you adapt it? I have "those other guns" but the group I hunt with always love to see me do the job with JUST a single shot.   ;)  but the thought of a LONG shot at all free hand makes me cringe and I know I won't take the shot if it is at all marginal.  So anyone with an idea - please share. I even considered buying another forend to modify but want to weigh all options before I go that extreme.
( Respectfully- please don't start a debate on long shots, we will be practicing a lot out to 400yds so all shots will be within our comfort zone. Thanks)
Thanks in advance, Brent thejanitor

I installed another sling stud behind the one on the front.Makes mounting a sling and bi pod real easy. Here it is on my lammy 17M2 and on my 223 with the survivor forearm.Slow

I even have the spare sling stud in the drawer :)  any one else please feel free to continue the topic if you have any questions about it.  I will follow along but I think this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
Thanks Brent

The crossed sticks type rest (popular with the BPCR shooters) should work.  You can adjust some models to shoot from prone or sitting.  It doesn't attach to the gun, thus makeing it "unhandi" and if you're crafty, you can make one yourself.

I have to agree with the guys that suggested shooting off your pack or shooting sticks. I been going to South Dakota for several years chasing the goats and started out with a bipod but find most long range shots are better in the prone position off the backpack. If you are crawling on a goat in short grass country, chances are you will be on your belly anyway. Also carry a set of shooting sticks  to use while taking a break or just setting somewhere glassing. Pulled the front swivel stud out of a M77 MII Ruger one time using a bipod!

Was reading Sniper 1 (Brits in Iraq) the other day. One option was suspending the gun from a rope. Was thinking of trying that this year in a spot where I sit on a log under a tree looking downhill 50-300 yards.

I use a pair of folding shooting sticks from Hunter specialties. I use them for almost all my shooting at the coyotes. They fit in my pack just fine, and setup is quick. I pull shots off them sticks that I could only dream of doing offhand.

My father-in-law said his best luck (I asked him since he's been at Handis over 35 years) was to lay the barrel across your pack sliding the fore end right up to the pack for consistency. The pack should absorb barrel vibration.

Like some of these other guys said, the crossed, collapsible shooting sticks work really well.

Thanks every body! There are some really good ideas here. I think I need to re-make my cross sticks I made for predator hunting. I made them about 5 years ago and never got very comfortable with them. And as many of you that use them, they may need dusted off and some practice time on them to make me feel more comfortable with them. And the shoot from the pack idea will always be an option since we always have one along. I just wasn't too sure how tall sage brush usually is (6-9 inch bipod may be too short...)and all but I tend to over think some things just a tad too much. I just wanted to have some views from you that have done it more. With this info in use on the range we should be able to determine what we like and then when the time come for THE shot we should have it worked out pretty good. Thank you all very much, I would like to promise a success picture but at this point we aren't even in the tag drawing yet.- Brent

Use your pack if the grass is short...I usually get slightly better groups doing that than with a bipod. Use some 1" PVC pipe, 1/4" bolt, couple washers and a wingnut to make some sticks. Cut them so that they are the proper height when you are sitting on you rear. They should then be short enough to strap to the pack without being in the way, and will be right there if you need them at the end of a hopefully productive stalk. ;) A little cloth tape on the top end helps keep them from sliding out from under the rifle at a bad time.
