Ballpark price on Model 4" Model 10
« on: December 21, 2009, 12:29:39 PM »
I'm kicking around the idea of picking up an old PD service revolver for plinking and protection from ferrel dogs and 2 legged varmints I may encounter in the woods.  At one time PD trade ins were a great value and plentiful.

Can anyone give me ballpark values of the Model 10 service revolver made around the 70's ranging in condition from well used but sound with lots of holster wear to used little with minimal wear?

Thanks.

p.s.; I've located a nickeled one at a local pawn shop that they are asking $400 for.  Even with a factory nickel finish in fair to good condition this seems like a high asking price to me.   I would prefer a blued one for my purposes anyway.

Hard to say - prices have gone up, some people are unreasonably high...greed, obama, whatever!
I just turned down a 90% 5-screw M&P they wanted $285 plus tax (pawn shop).... that was a fair deal IMHO, but I couldn't spend the $.
For a 'shooter' Model 10....sound, not abused, good used condition... I'll say no more than $300.  $250 much better. Depends on how much you want it.
For a revolver you keep 20 years or more, what's an extra $50 or so?

Prices are crazy high, $400 for a 95%+ M10 is not uncommon.  I don't think they are going to come down.  When the price of new guns go up so do used ones.

I paid $425 for a near mint model 10-5 on Gunbroker. There a bunch of used model 64 DAO's for sale (real good prices) from a Brinks trade in at one of the national discount places, can't remember which one off hand, I'll post if I can find the link.

I've seen that site.   Been doing some research.  Unfortunately the DOA mod. kills their value even if it were done by S&W.   So the prices are good but not great for what they are.   They also have some model 64s (fixed sites) for even less.  Again once you pay their inflated shipping charges and an FFL to handle the transfer the price is about what you would expect to pay for a non-modified (SA/DA) one at a local pawn or gun shop and at least you get to examine it before buying.

With patience, lots of patience, you can get M10s for under $300 (+shipping+FFL fee) on gunbroker.  I've done it myself.  If you get your knickers in a twist and have no patience you can plan on paying $400 or more.

I saw a NIB gun from the 80s bring $600 at a live auction this weekend, but the gun you describe should sell for right around $300. I have been buying and selling on GunBroker and I will look for one for you. I went to an auction 6 months ago where they sold 24 of them, police training guns, but I only bought one, and it is long gone. It should be an easy one to come up with, Shotgunner

I'm way late for the party due to out of town ventures, however, here's a couple decent S&W model 10's for under $300:
