Far to many shooters use scopes and do not know how to use or adjust Iron sights.
When that scope goes bad, you have a nice expensive Club. ;)

Many Buffalo were killed with the 45-70 and Iron sights.

At 53 I can't see the sights or the deer.  Scopes are faster for me.  I've never had a scope go bad.

I agree with Swampy.  :o  Although if you buy cheap junk scopes then failure is a definite possibility. ESP if its on a caliber that recoils.
I like the durability of open sites, esp peeps. But as we age its definitely a benefit to have good optics.

LO fixed power scopes are very fast, esp if mounted forward like a scout setup. You can shoot with both eyes open witch greatly aids depth perception and overall accuracy. BUT its not so great for long range. (Over 300) But I don't think this is any worry for you as you have said a couple times, 50 yards is your goal.

Again, I just don't know why you cannot just keep factory sites and save the coin for another project? I mean the factory sites are just fine for such short ranges, even with poor eye site! Personally, limiting yourself to such short ranges, if your hunting it is just to confining.

I've got a Leupold Vari.X III 1.5-5X20 that I got off e-bay for just over $200. In my mind it's pefect for a Handi-45/70. Before I got the Leupy my Handi-45/70 toted an older Weaver K4 for a while. That scope has been around forever and has been mounted on almost every rifle I own at one time or another. It is over 25 years old and still going strong. If I hadn't gotten the Leupold the K4 would probably still be on the Handi 45/70.

Be careful what you buy off of Ebay. Not only are you contributing to an anti gun establishment, a lot of the Leupolds sold there are fakes and Leupold won't repair them.

From what I understand, they are pretty nice for Chinascopes, but they aren't Leupolds.

If the Vari. X III I bought is a counterfeit  I'll take a gross at the price I paid. I don't know if e-bay is anti-gun or not.  They sure facilitate the sale of a lot of gun related products thru thier site. Scopes, rings, dies, powder scales, presses, bullets and brass to name a few. I wish all anti-gunners would help us progunners market and purchase the products related to our common interest.

They are MOST DEFINITELY Anti-gun!! But like most antis they are hypocritical and will allow some gun related sales if it fills there coffers...  I don't know of this counterfeit scope scam, but don't doubt it. But its nothing about EBay, that's the seller and is fraud and should be honored for full replacement under eBay own rulings.

Know this about Leupold, you will not find a better or more consumer friendly service department! They WILL repair any VXI or better scope for the LIFE OF THE SCOPE!! They do not care who or home many different people own it!! I personally own a couple dozen Leupold's, most VX II's some VARI X II's and still less VXIII's. Now before you think I'm made of money and there fore my opinions do not count. I have only even bought but a couple at reg retail prices. I buy the vast majority form the used counter or EBay or right here on GBO. Take the time to look and you too will soon find a Leupold you can afford. Stealing some words from another ember here, "I cannot afford anything less than a Leupold".

Counterfeit Leupold Riflescope Warning

Leupold® is issuing a customer alert to purchasers of products, particularly via Internet sales, in regards to bogus Leupold products that are apparently being illegally imported from the People’s Republic of China. These products bear many of the marks and trade dress of current Leupold & Stevens riflescopes making them very hard to distinguish externally from authentic Leupold products.

While I have never had an issue with parellax, the shotgun scopes are set at 75 yds, while the rifle scopes are set at 100, or ocasionally 150 yds.  That is the only difference between the two scopes.  I have been told by a man that is intimate with several of the scope companies, that there are no construction differences, ie. being able to handle recoil.  Pick the one that suits you best.  44 Man
