I'm kind of the same way Dee. Don't usually even notice them.

Weeeeelllllllllll, I just finished the action job on my new 686 2 /1/2 inch. Took the burrs off the cylinder hand and mainspring, and put it back together. Butter smooth. I wonder if it's that trigger lock key? ;D

Probably not, but I'll bet that "licking" keeps everything lubed up really well. ;) ;D

We know you were just testing us Dee, to see if we were paying attention. ;) Now I'm going to be looking over my shoulder for spelling errors on everything I write. ;D Can't wait until you give us a range report on the new 686. I'm looking at the "Chief's Special" with the 2 1/2" barrel. Isn't that the model you used to carry? I like the smaller frame, and if the barrel is screwed on correctly I can easily live with the fixed rear sights.

As far as the topic of this thread, I can't say I really like the lock on the S&W, but I could get used to seeing it. I'd never use it, so it probably wouldn't get in my way. It's more of a negative aesthetic feature for me. I'm more upset about the way S&W so eagerly jumped into a pact with the government to produce handguns with the locks.

I've already taken it out and shot it, I just had not finished the action job. It shot very well, and was what I expected form Smith and it's 686.
Also I'll be watchin your spellin, but you knew that. ;)

My statement was based on my response from our readers.  I don't recall anyone saying they bought a S&W revolver because it had a lock.  Do you?  Most everyone who bought a key lock S&W did so in spite of the lock.  I quote Shootall:  "I'm with Dee,  it really doesn't matter".   NOBODY said they would buy a S&W BECAUSE it has a lock.

I would like to clarify that when I use caps, it doesn't mean I'm throwing a fit, it just means I haven't learned to underline or highlite stuff yet.

jcn59, I like to throw fits with capital letters. I don't think anyone took you wrong, and if they did they'll get over it. This is discussion and sometimes we don't agree, and our prowess with a keyboard sometimes causes misunderstandings. Don't worry about it.

I understand what you were saying.  Your point was that the lock is not a selling point.  I took your comment as S&W was not selling many guns because of the lock, which is not the case.  In fact it is a great discussion topic but has little to do with the selling/use of the weapon.  I have a mix of lockable and unlockable and like and use both.  It is not an issue for me.

Put me squarely in the camp of those who don't use the lock, but aren't bothered by it at all. Am I bothered by the litigious nature of our society and lack of tort reform? Yes indeed.

I find Shootall's post about the M1911 a great point, and I'll add a mention of various earlier S&W revolvers with grip safeties (from lemon-squeezers on). I carried the .45 auto in the first half of my Army career and the last thing I was worried about was the grip safety, although I learned I'd better hold the weapon completely square when firing. I own, and have owned, a variety of S&W revolvers and I really love them. Just wish I could own more & shoot more!

If they installed locks because of litigiousness, that's a shame, but I couldn't blame them for trying to avoid lawsuits. If they installed them because they're owned by a lock company, OK, that doesn't bother me since it doesn't impact my use of the revolver.

As for my Marlins with safeties, I REALLY like them because it allows me to lever the rounds out of the magazine with enhanced safety. If someone appreciate the S&W locks because they're useful for them, that's absolutely fine by me. It's also fine if someone doesn't like the locks. . .to each his own. I guess I don't understand the emotion on the issue.

I dare say a woman who has both young children and a need for a gun may in fact buy a gun with a lock because it has the added safety of the lock .

Never owed a S&W with the newer locks but, now own a JRC 500 and never thought of it till you mentioned it? Just ignore the locks.

Well, I'd still like to know if Dee's old carry gun was a Chief's Special with a 2 1/2" barrel. ;)

When I was younger Skunk I carried for the most part Model 19s and 1911s alternately, on and off duty. My favorite at the time in small revolvers was a nickel plated Colt Detective Special. It was strictly backup. I trusted the revolvers much more until I started building 1911s, and then it eventually became an all around issue.
I was forced to use a pistol involving three cars on three seperate occasions and the 357 mag way out performed the 45acp in all instances. The last instance was with a 45acp, and I sold the 45 the next day. I gradually went back to them, but it was always in the back of my mind "what if". "What if" never happened again, but in the end, at 60 years of age, I trust the revolver more, as even weak ammo will function without a hitch, and I can be more relaxed in all areas.
I re-evaluated my personal experience over the years, and all the officers I personally knew that had fought with a pistol, and decided that the auto really wasn't as necessary as most think, and what it really took, was the will, and know how, to win. Many on the auto wagon will disagree. That's ok. I been there, and I am comfortable with my decision.

The reality of the new wave of built in gun locks that you see in many brands besides S&W is really just a matter of avoiding being sued, allowing for sales in increasingly restrictive locals, you know, trying to stay in business.  I don't like it any more then anyone else, but those are the realities manufactures face.  At least most systems I have seen are pretty low key.

Thanks for the info Dee. I looked at some pics of the Model 19. Very nice. Also noticed that Chiefs Special is indeed a "Special." That being a .38 Special. I guess what I'm looking for then is a Model 60, which has the Chiefs Special frame, but is chambered for .357 Mag.

Yes Sir, now that piece is very nice. From what I read, it weighs about the same as a SP101 (maybe a little less), and comes with the nice S&W trigger and quality. I'll bet a guy wouldn't even have to dehorn all the burrs and rough edges off a new S&W like what's needed on a new SP101. Thanks for sharing the picture, Dee.

Seems funny that LE used revolvers 110 years or more, then when they switched to bottom feeders, POW !   Revolvers got locks!   (but bottom feeders STILL don't have locks)  ??

jcn59, very good point. Never thought about it this way, hmmm. So, who's fooling who? They've told us it for the lawyers why have they left the semi autos alone? Now looks to me like we're paying for whistles and bells we don't even want(in this light).

You guys need to get out more and do some research before you start writing about S&W guns. The M&P line has locks except Military and some Police versions. Standard civilian version has the lock, in other words most of S&W very popular M&P guns are lock equipped and have the magazine disconnects and some have manual safety. The S&W Forum has lots of documented lock failures of their guns and I was one of those, my 647 and one other new S&W engaged the lock and would not fire. For me I was lucky and both were at range and let to me to remove the locks and one member to make a plug for those holes when the lock is removed and my 610-3 has one of the plugs installed.

As for Marlin lever guns I have three, '94M, '94C and 94P and all have the crossbar safety and I like it for that safe ejection of ammo for those not too good with unloading. What Marlin did lately on the 39A with the rebound hammer really is stupid and has triggers so bad (14 to 20 lbs) as to make it impossible to shoot sub 1" to 1.5" range at 50 yards by most of the 39A rifles.

I agree with you on the locks, I can't stand them. I also have a safe of S&Ws, but it is not yet full. I bought a 1950 Target in 44 Special yesterday. You don't have any old Smiths you want to sell do you? Shotgunner

I have a S&W 386 and have never had an issue with the lock.
But my Taurus 1911 locked the hammer after about 65 rounds. I was at an indoor range and in the middle of the second box of ammo and it locked up. Of course I did not have the key with me. Only took about one hour and $75 for a new hammer and sear to fix the problem for good. And know I know how a 1911 works.
