what is a "good "caliber for hunt

"Good" cartridges include the .223, .22-250, and .220 Swift.  The .243 and .25-06 will work if used with the lighter varmint bullets, but the first three are generally known as THE varmint cartridges.

I have a .25-06 for deer/antelope and varmint hunting.  But if I were to get a rifle/caliber STRICTLY for predator hunting, then I'd consider the .243.  I like the .243 for deer and smaller, but I found the .25-06 to be a better long range shooter.

So I guess I'm saying look at the .243 and .25-06 for the uses you've stated.

Hi all. I like BigBill's idea on this one. I shoot alot of 7mm Mauser myself. It's a great round with light recoil and very accurate and easy to reload for off 30-06 brass. With the 7mm bullets you shouldn't have problems if your wanting to save pelts. The 30-06 and the 8mm Mauser are alittle over kill on coyotes and cougars. I have 4 7mm Mausers, 3 M95's small rings and a large ring Mauser in 7mm Mauser. I've hunted game from deer on down without a problem as of yet! The 6.5mm Mauser is a great little round as well, but! It's going to cost more to reload for then the 7mm Mauser due to the higher cost of the brass. I hunt wild pigs and bobcats with 7mm Mauser as well. The 7 Mauser is a great starter round for the old lady and my now 13 year old girl has been shooting one for the last 3 years. As for bullet sizes? The 7mm Mauser runs from 110gr to 175gr bullets. I like the Speer 115gr hollow points on the coyotes. For the cougars i would go with something around the 140grs on the bullet size. Paw

Actually, I personally plan on using my .375 H&H on hogs for practice on my future safari hunt in Africa as well. (Of course my primary reason was to see those hogs really hurt. :twisted:   That doesn't make me a bad person, does it? :grin: )
