6.5 JDJ Case Life

Hello all

What is about the average case life everyone is getting from their 6.5 JDJ brass?  Mine don't seem  to last past 4 firings as the necks seem to split.  I only neck size once fire formed and trim when necessary.  I am using published loads with RL-15 under 120 grain NBT seated to 2.885

     If you're only getting 4 loadings with that stated load something is wrong.  I agree with the annealing but I would also check your headspacing very carefully.  You want it headspacing on the shoulder.  Is your barrel a SSK....if so I'd give ol' JD a call if the problem continues.  I have had a split neck occasionally, but not often.  I'd bet I've got cases that have been loaded 10 times.  A chamber cast might not be a bad idea either.  One of the definate pluses of the 6.5JDJ is the .225 brass....it's tough.

As a more direct answer to the question asked you really should get 15-20 firings on a case before it gives up on you if you are not loading too hot and if all else is as it should be. The .225 Win. case is a really strong case and properly loaded and fired in a chamber of proper dimensions there is no reason cases shouldn't last a really long time.

I've gotten 10-15 loads from 7-30 Waters with much weaker brass.

I have loaded cases 12+ times without any issues.
I really like my 6.5 JDJ, she shoots the 120 gr BT at 2400 fps.

 I agree with annealing  the brass. I had the same problem with my 375JDJ brass and after I annealed the brass the split necks stopped. I have probably have 12+ firings on my 6.5JDJ brass but then I anneal all of my brass after 6 firings. I use Varmint Al's annealing method.

Yes it is an SSK barrel and I don't think I'm running too hot at 35g of RL-15.

I am going to try annealing the case necks and see how that goes.  And maybe talk to JD also.

You stated that you are neck sizing your brass. Make sure that you are not bumping the shoulder back. I had a 7 x 30 jdj barral a few years back, and ran into the same probelm very short case life. Then I figured out that my sizing die was adjusted incorrectly, I readjusted it, formed new brass and have gotten well over 10 firings out them since.
