BRI style slugs?
« on: October 19, 2009, 04:14:13 AM »
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of the old Winchester BRI style 1 ounce slug, or the similar Federal slug. I am thinking of using these but want to hear if they are any good. I will be hunting MI whitetails. Any thoughts ?

Two of my buddies have used them, one the 12ga 3" Federal and the other the 12ga 2 3/4" Winchester. Accuracy was absolutely terrific; killing or stopping power was absolutely not. Recovered only 1 slug and it showed no expansion. 1st deer was hit 'Texas-heart shot' (to right of tail and traveled lengthwise into front shoulder) and traveled 500+yds. Had to shoot again to put down. His other deer we did recover (but no slugs), we tracked it about a mile and he put another 2 shots into it, till his cousin put it down for him (he was in a treestand and saw it was hurt/stumbling). Entrance and exit holes were same size, save his cousin's Lightfield shot. Other buddy hit and lost another deer and said it was a good shot, but never recovered. Since then, both have moved onto other slugs (one Lightfield, other Winchester Platinum tip).

I know a guy who uses them all the time and has good luck with them. The rest of us use in the group use winchester rifled slugs and he kills as many deer as anyone. It's all about shot placement. Hit in the right, a deer won't go far no matter what it is!!!!!!!

I have never used them but I have heard they are very accurate.  The one thing I noticed is that they are slow, at least the winchesters are.  I think they are around 1350 fps for the 2 3/4 inch slugs and 1400 fps for the 3 inch slugs which to me puts the max effective range at about 100 yds with and energy of about 1000 ft-lbs which is about as low as I would got at that range but I tend to be conservative because I hate losing deer.  I think if you look it up you will find that you need at least 800 ft-lbs to kill a deer ethically and humanely.  The winchester partition golds have anywhere from 1400-2300 ft-lbs of energy at the same distance.

I think if you are going to keep your shots under 75yds, you probably could not do any better because at those ranges, they have plenty of energy and are very accurate.  I think if you are going to be pushing 100 to 120 yd  shots then you need something faster with more energy and a flatter trajectory.

My sons gun shot them well mine did not both were Savage 210's . I went with lightfields 1-1/8 oz because they shoot best in my gun .
A 20 ga 870 i have shoots the winchester ok .
You should find the slug that shoots best in your gun and use that . Ask yourself how long your shots will really be and how much pratice and cash you are willing to spend to have a 150-200 yard slug gun .
The lightfields i use are good to 125 yards , cost 3 dollars each and kick like a mule . Longest shot i have had so far is 80 yards and it worked just fine . I tried about 8 different loads to find the one that shot best and that was before slugs went thru. the roof  cost wise . If I had to do it today and buy new ammo , I would start with Cheap slugs and work up until i found something that worked .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

A friend of mine uses them in his Mossberg 935.   He's happy with them.

I've taken several deer over the years starting with the original BRI's. The most one went after being hit was about 10yrds. They are so accurate you don't have to shoot the shoulder, but the neck, eye, heart, liver, and lungs. Out to a 100yrds it's like shooting a rifle.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.
