500 S&W cast bullet reload data needed
« on: September 27, 2009, 09:05:04 AM »
Hello!... Well I am about to test out my new Handi in 500 S&W... I have some Lee .501-440 gr cast bullets all ready to load , now I need some data...
What I want to try out is H4198 powder for a reduced load.. I've not been able to find data with this powder , Hodgdon website does not list it either.. I relaize it's considered too slow , but I've read it will work for medium power loads from author and shooter John Ross's website along with H335 powder even..

Any recomendations on where to start would be appreciated!

Thanks

Bob

If you don't come up with any useable data, I can give you some recommendations for H4198 based upon QuickLoad3.4 predictions, it doesn't look like a very good powder to use considering there are plenty of good powders and supporting data available that perform well in the Handi. I'll need the weight in grains of water for case capacity of a fired case filled to overfill,  and the length of that bullet as well as COL for your loaded round. John Taffin's article in the FAQs has some great looking data that I'd surely be trying if I wanted a plinking load for the 500S&W.  ;)
