Hasting Barrels
« on: September 22, 2009, 06:59:34 AM »
I have a Remington 870.  I need a slug barrel for it.  Does any one have any experience with Hastings rifled slug barrels.  I am looking at the Hastings 12 GA. PARADOX® EXTENDED SCOPE MOUNT.  What is your opinion and what slugs do you shoot?  I have been invited on a shotgun only hunt and need to get my gun ready.  Thanks.

IMO the Hastings is the best made after market barrel their is. The Win. BRI's are very accurate out of that barrel. After shooting the new Rem. AccuTips they may be better yet.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I have a Hastings Paradox Scope mount barrel for my 12 ga Ithaca 37. Awesome barrel accuracy-wise and the ported barrel does really reduce muzzle jump. Cannot say if any louder as have had ear muffs at range but no one else complained (some ported barrels can be ear-piercing loud). I found great accuracy so far with Lightfield EXPs; will be trying Remington Buckhammers and Winchester Platinums next.

I have a hastings cantilever scope mount barrel on my 870. I've never used the barrel with the muzzle break but I've hunted with guys who had it and they really liked it. I use Winchester Partition Gold slugs and it shoots those very well. It also shoots the Hornady SST accurately but I don't use those anymore because I like a heavier slug.

Mine loves Hastings 2 3/4 in magnums.  5 shots at 50 yds just leaves one big ragged hole.  It hated the hornaday sst's.  Just goes to show that every gun/barrel likes something different even if they are the same exact brand and model.  Go out and buy about $50 (or $100 if you are going to try the accutips) worth of slugs and see what yours like.  Try a variety of different weights and speeds.

Update: Tried the Winchester Platinums and they cut a 1 ragged hole at 50yds. So, accuracy-wise they are there; now
to try on the real thing...
