.44 Mag Handi
« on: August 31, 2009, 10:26:43 AM »
Well fellas, I am going to take the plunge in a short while. I believe I am going to purchase a .44 Mag Handi. I have heard so much about all the .44 Mag handis on here and I think it will be a perfect choice for me. I live in eastern NC and when I head back home to The PA woods, it will still be a viable choice. Plus the .44 is a great round to reload for. The woods of eastern NC and PA are quite thick in most areas and the heavy weight bullets, especially the hard cast ones will be an excellent choice. I already have my long range rig in .308 Win. Any advice from you all will be appreciated. As I posted not long ago about possibly a .357 handi for Coyote, and occasionally a deer or 2. I think the .44 will be better. And no, I don't intend to keep any of the hides, I use my shotgun when I do.
When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat, Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?
We're here to fight."

Read the FAQ section here. Do it, even if you have no troubles. There is lots and lots of information there about scopes, mounts, trigger jobs, etc. As far as ammo, it sounds like you are going to hand load heavy cast bullets. Slug your barrel to find out exactly what your bore size is. Cast bullets usually shoot best when they are .001" - .0015" over bore. If you buy a new 44 Mag it can only be fitted with a 357 Mag or some of the shotgun barrels. I have both the 44 mag and a 357 Mag reamed to Max, both on SB2 frames. I like both, but I prefer the versatility of the 357 Max. That is just my personal preference. Good Luck and Good Shooting

Congrats on the 44Mag...good choice. I live in Southwest VA in the Blue Ridge mountains and the 44 is a great choice for these parts. My great uncle use to use an old Ruger 44Mag carbine to hunt black bear around here, and it's the cal ..and rifle...he swore by.
I know I love mine, I am sure you will as well.
Have fun with her.

Alien 319 -- First off, many thanks for your hard work, loyalty and sacrifice as a Marine.  Are you still Active, or MFR?  It's an honor for me to know and work for Marines in my job.

Second, I agree that the .44 Magnum is a great short-range rifle cartridge, easy to load for, and a great cast-bullet round as well.

Lastly -- is riding in that V-22 as much fun as it looks like?  From what I've seen on TV, it looks like a pretty slick way to get around!

No thanks is needed. I am still on active duty, and I no longer fly and work on the MV-22 Osprey as I did a lateral move to MP, but I had a blast flying on it. It is a heck of a ride. Very fast, very smooth and it is a revolutionary aircraft on the battlefield. I think the .44 mag will be a blast in the handi.
