Hornady flex tip 44mag
« on: August 29, 2009, 02:18:46 AM »
Any experience with the Hornady 44mag flex tip. I'm looking for a deer load in the hundred yard area and thought these might be the ticket.

IMHO, I can see no advantage over any other jacketed bullet when used in a handgun....especially @ ranges up to 100 yards. They sure are cute little buggers tho.......

I don't think Hornady is selling their 44 mag flex tip bullets yet. All they have are the 265gr 444 rifle bullets.

I don't know about the 44mag, but I just bought a box of 20 of the LE loads to use in a tube mag Winchester Trapper model 94 AE this year for Deer.  Figgered they would be good in the tube mag of the Winchester.

I'll let all of you know how they worked after November is over, I hope.

I can't speak on Revolver results, the 265 gr Hdy Fn is soft enough to work out of a 44 cal carbine for hunting

I can't speak for a revolver either, but I used them to zero in my new Marlin 1894 and was impressed with the accuracy.

That's what they were originally designed for, isn't it? Personally, I don't see much advantage using them in a revolver, you'ld be better served with their XTPs?

Hornady designed the 265 gr bullet expressly for the 444 Marlin after a lot of complaints that the original Remington load with the 240 gr pistol bullet gave inadequate penetration on larger game.

The 265 gr was chosen by Hdy as the heaviest weight( with the bullet lenght) the slow twist on the early 444 Marlin  would stabilize

I meant "for use in lever guns with tube magazines".

my brother used one on a bison last year.  worked fine.  found in the offside hide with only one "petal" still on it but had retained 210gr of the starting 225.  i thought that pretty good as it had been shot through both shoulders at about 30 yards.  sure there were better bullets for a buff but for deer and other smaller game.  my son uses them for that and they've been flawless.

I have not killed a deer with the 225 grain red tipped bullets yet, but I normally hunt with the Hornady 200 grain XTP over a full charge of VV N-110. My Smith M-29 PC revolver will put all 6 shots in a 6" pie plate (even after I've eaten the pie  ;D ) at 100 yards. (from a bench of course).

Now, the M-29 will do the same thing with the same POA using the 225 grain red nose Hornady's.

I find that pretty impressive since the red nose bullets are 25 grains heavier. Same POA, same POI, heavier bullet @ 100 yards.

FWIW
