Condor over/under and pigs
« on: August 28, 2009, 01:29:46 PM »
The new Stoeger Condor over/under with short barrels and rifle sights has caught my fancy, but I have not had a chance to examine one.  It would seem to be a good choice as a slug gun for close-in pig hunting.  I am planning on hunting in Virginia Beach next month and the hogs may be within a few feet or may be out a ways.  The hunting zone that I have applied for could offer shots up to 75 yards.  I have used my Winchester 1400, my Mossberg 500, and my Marlin Slugmaster in the past, but was not exactly satisfied with any of them.  This may be just the excuse to add to the arsenal.  Has anyone had a chance to play with one?

Haven't shot one of those, but had a Stoeger Uplander coach gun once and the problem with it was the barrels didn't shoot to same point of aim.  In fact they were way off - at about 25 yards the right barrel hit low and right and the left barrel hit high and left!  Using a 12" square target, the right barrel was off the paper and the left barrel clipped the upper right corner.

This is a common problem with cheap S/S's and O/U's, although usually not that extreme.  As a general rule I believe the O/U's tend to shoot both barrels closer than the S/S's, but I think it would be a rare example that would shoot both barrels to point of aim at 40 yards.

Another thing about the Condor Outback is that it has a non-selective trigger so it always fires the lower barrel first - so if that happened to be the least accurate barrel you'd really be out of luck!

I agree with you - in concept it looks like a real handy short range slug gun, but I just have my doubts you'd ever find one that shot as accurate as you want.

In the marshes where I prefer to hunt, there are few places where is would be possible to get a shot over 50 yards.  A rifled bore offers little in such an environment.  My loads would be one slug and one buckshot.  I am going to order some tri-ball from Dixie as the buck loads.  If there is time for a second shot, it would be with buckshot.  I would not look forward to having to follow up a wounded pig in the grass.  The grass in the marsh is the right height to hit you in the eye if you bump into it.  The pig trails are just wide enough to walk down with grasses brushing both shoulders.  In this environment, keeping a slug on a paper plate at 50 yards is plenty accurate enough.  Rapid handling would be a more important concern.  I have jumped hogs at several feet, and so being able to shoot while still going up in the air could be one of the other requirements.  Having a 250 pound hog appear like that makes it hard to keep your feet on the ground.

Sounds like it might work good in those conditions, and carrying buckshot in the second barrel should do away with the problems of trying to sight in both barrels.

Good luck with it!

Having dealt with the point of impact issue with a few combo guns that did not have adjustments, I would suggest you put a laser bore sight in each barrel to determine the point of impact prior to purchasing the gun.

I had a Condor outback  I was not happy  with it enough to make it fit .. I traded for a 20ga 870 pump and I'am very happy with it,
