model 788 ejection interferance
« on: August 04, 2009, 12:14:54 AM »
just started shooting my .308 and the scope is in the way of the ejected brass. i'm using weaver low rings. brass flies a mile with the scope off. anybody  else have this problem? wondering if i need medium or even high rings. or a scope with caps that don't stick out over the ejection port? maybe rotate the scope?

I've never tried any speed drills with mine to check on ejection problems. I've got Med Weavers on mine and it's wearing an older Tasco 3x9. If ya try to turn the scope, to move the caps outa the way, you'll be looking at an X instead of a +.  Be kind weird crosshairs, huh?
I'd say find some medium mounts first.

Two ways ta do that:

  • Rotate the scope so the windage becomes elevation and the elevation rotates away from the ejection path... or...
  • ..some mounts have a limited amount of leeway fore and aft; find a "sweet spot" for the mounts where by sliding the scope back and forth you can find a place where the ejected cases just miss the windage cap.

I've done it both ways and it works.  Rotating the scope makes adjustments counter-intuitive, but it's the simplest.

Yes, rotate the scope 90 degrees away from the ejection port. The brass hits the elevation turret unless you do. You just have to remember to keep it straight when you adjust the scope, but other than that it doesn't affect anything. Cheap, fast, and simple, my kind of solution.

Weaver use to make a one piece base that eliminated the problem.  I don't know if they still make it or not, I have a couple somewhere in the bottom of the gun cabinet.
Good Shooting,
