Hey guys what do you think of the new 597 VTR? I like it a bunch. Looks like a very cool 22 LR. I wonder what it will cost? Dale

It's not something I'd buy.

I think it's pretty cool Dale, although I've never seen or shot one yet. But like I said in your other post about the 597 VTR, if I was going to have an AR22, I'd get one of the after market kits for a 10/22 Ruger. I might change my mind after the VTR proves itself like the 10/22 has over many decades. Just my opinion of course. You should get one of the new VTRs and give us a report.

I thought the 597 action was pretty hit and miss for reliability, except the 22 mag version which is a little more consistent. If they didn't solve those problems, I'd have to agree on one of the stock/conversion packages for a 10/22.

From what I've seen, the initial reliability issues on the 597 were a result of the magazine design.  Since the new magazines came out 2-3 yrs ago, the guns have been MUCH better.  I think the VTR is a pretty cool little set up.  If the price is reasonable, I'm sure they'll sell very well.

I think they sell for about $550.00. I think that is pretty steep for a 22LR. :o Don't look like I will be buying one soon. Dale

"Two models will be available. The “Model 597 VTR 22LR with A2 Stock” model will MSRP for $445 (10 round magazine) and $479 (30 round magazine).

The “Model 597 VTR 22LR with Collapsible Stock” features a Pardus collapsible stock and had an MSRP of $479."

Not saying that its worth it - just a lot less than $550. And nearly all firearms do not sell at full retail. FWIW , I agree  , for $250-$275 I might consider it.

When I stated $550.00 I was going off memory. :o I should know better. ::) If it were say $300.00 or so I would give it serious thought. I like the one pictured. Not the one with the folding stock. Dale

I wouldn't buy anything with the 597 action.  Been there done that and I'm glad I got rid of that piece of junk!  Remington is infamous for just changing the appearance of a failed designed and then peddling it off as something new.  I wish they would make sure something works before rushing it to market. They lose customers because of this. I've never seen a 597 action that was reliable without many aftermarket mods.  Many gunshops will not even take a 597 on trade or work on them. The mag thing was not a real fix, it is the poor machining of the ejector and the cast magnesium parts they use. The mag would also stick but was not the only cause of the jamming and stove pipes. All the ones I've seen will jam out of the box and are subpar compared to other cheap 22lr semi-autos out there.  Even the Chinese 22lr guns are better than the 597.

For what that's going to cost, I'd rather go a different route to get that look in a 22LR.  There is the GSG 22LR in the different configurations and then there's the new colt M4 22LR.  Both of those are around $500 for a cool looking 22LR.  Back when ammo was at its highest I was strongly considering the GSG 22LR for something economical to shoot.  This new 597 is just trying to get on the wagon, and it's just ugly as sin.
