Nearly had the big one today
« on: May 25, 2009, 03:06:46 PM »
I was cutting the hammer spur off my new Handi this afternoon when the Dremel wheel exploded. I just knew it had marred the wrist of the stock. Nearly in a panic I was relieved to see no scars. The operation was a success and my old faithful K1.5 Micro trac has a new home sitting low and sweet on the BC 45. I picked up some 250 gr. Hornady XTPs and a set of RCBS carbide dies today. It looks like I'll have to order brass, it can't be found locally. Looked for some H4227 powder and came up empty too.

Glad to hear that you and that nice rifle of yours are ok. I have had a couple of cutting wheels blow up on me before. I almost wet my pants.

I usually take all my frames to a bench grinder to take off a little off the hammer. Then polish it up with a file.
It's easy, looks nice,  and saves you from having to buy higher rings.

I use either a sanding drum or the reinforced cutoff wheels in the dremel, makes quick work of the job.  ;)

Wrap a old tee shirt around the stock and duct tape over the tee. Makes you worry less.

I had a shop towel wrapped around it. Thank goodness, I think that's what saved me.

Fiber reinforced cutoff wheels are all I ever use in my Dremel for any job.

Promax has them for less than the Dremel item and every pack comes with another spindle.
I get them at a local hardware store, but they might be available from an online vendor too if you look around some.

Those red 'Necco Wafer' jobs are too fragile... next to useless IMO.  >:(
