Hd to share this...
« on: April 14, 2009, 07:59:35 AM »
In 1978 my Grandpa passed away suddenly. :'( He was my best friend and more and his death was just about the end of me.One of the few items I recieved was a Savage 340C 30-30.Nothing fancy but it was his.For some unknown PSYCHO reason I traded it off to the brother of my baby sister's boyfriend for an old Iver Johnson 16 ga. single shot. Many times over the years I wondered about that rifle.I was thinking about it just yesterday.I even bought a couple 340's but none could , or should , replace it. I went to Cabelas in Hamburg Pa. today to get some muzzleloading supplies and as is my usual practice I checked out the overpriced used racks. There was a forelorne 340C there.Blonde stock with drips of Linspeed oil on it.Kinda looked like a teenager did it...I looked at the bottom of the grip and there were the initials HA scratched into it.Just like Grandpa's...Dont know who HA was , my Grandpa's initials were JF.I thought I was gonna feint. The final test came when I had them cut the zipstrip off the bolt handle so I could cycle the bolt and check the barrel.I had removed ,and lost, the lever and spring that secured the bolt rib and kept the bolt from rotating in the reciever until it was going into battery. I didn't even look but I yanked the bolt back and pushed the handle down.It moved. The lever was missing. Now somewhere there may be 2 340C's with HA carved into the grip, but another with that piece missing???I put her on layaway. She's dirty and has some rust but that's OK. I have Grandpa's rifle again... ;D God be praised

I think Grandpa put in a request with the Big Guy upstairs to get that rifle back where it belongs, congratulations.

It is amazing how things work out...I'm strictly a muzzleloader hunter now , a T/C Black Diamond XR .50 cal,but Grandpa's rifle will get blooded ! Its great to have a tangable legacy of a great man to pass down.
