Need a light recoil [243] load for grandson
« on: April 11, 2009, 03:03:19 PM »
I would like to find a low recoil load for grandsons 243. I would be using an 80 gr sp bullet. Grandson is only 5 yrs,and is small framed. HIS FIRST DEER WILL PROBABLY BE A YOUNG DOE.  THAT IS THE REASON FOR THE 80 GR BULLET. I am partial to varget and H4350 powder. I would appreciate your input.

jim36, Check out Hodgdon's website. Look under youth loads. They have a reduced loads section for the 243 and others with H4895. 5 is young and small, Good Luck!

Pardon the Question, what 85 gr bullet are you thinking of using?

Jim,
I understand what your trying to accomplish and the 243 will likely fit the bill nicely. I would like to suggest a better bullet, actually two bullets. The first is the Sierra 85Gr HPBT, the second is the 85Gr Nosler partition. These bullets are put together with the idea of smaller calibers (6X47) for smaller big game. You will be approximating these velocities and performance will be what you expect. Load it to about 27-2800 fps and your ready to go.

Thanks C W  I will probably give that one a try. I gave grandson his 243 today and I thought he would wet his pants. I started him out on a crickett 22 rifle with a red dot scope and he does quiet well with it. At age 5 he will be the youngest handiholic around. I appreciate this web site and the guys like yourself that help to keep it alive. Thanks again. Jim

jim36, I don't know how much shooting he has done. You might want to try a 100 of the V-max 56-58 gr. bullets to get him some practice. I don't know if it would make much difference on recoil, but at his size it might. I only shot a 243 about 20 rounds but I weigh over 200lbs. It might help him a little. I started my first son about that age with a 357 revolver, smacked him in the forehead at first shot. He was O. K. but not the smartest thing I've done. Light 38 Special might have been a better first choice. Have fun with him while you can. :)

Jim,
I second the recommendation on the Sierra 85 BTHP.  That is what I'm reloading for my daughter, age 9, who wants to get her first deer next year.  I also took the Hodgdon website advise and reloaded some H4895 at 31 grns with that 85 gr bullet.  Rem cases, and WLR, I also took the advice of the Sierra manual for the OAL.  This load shoots about 1" to 1.5" so far.  Yet to chronograph it but I'm guessing 2500-2600 fps.  This should be the ticket for her and her new handi this season.
Best of luck,
Deerandduck

Jim36:  The powder of choice for your desires is IMR's SR4759.  Works very well for light recoil loads on all .308 based cartridges in my experience - much better than the Hodgdon loads using H4895.  My current load is 23.0 grains behind an 80 grain Speer.  Pleasant shooting, accurate load.  Older IMR loading manuals published data for its use - but Hodgdon doesn't show it on their web site since they took IMR over.

http://www.imrpowder.com/data/rifle/243win.php

I will say that it works best with bullets less than 90 grains - I get high pressure signs with 100 grain bullets.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

I presume you are aware that the 80 gr Speer bullet is considered a varmint bullet by the maker.

I'd recommend the 75 grain Barnes TSX with the starting load from Barnes, which you can obtain from their website.

I have no personal, first hand experience with this bullet, but a hunting buddy of mine out in California uses a 6 X 47 mm Contender for blacktails every year and has used Barnes X bullets with totally satisfactory results in his Contender for a long time now.  The penetration is phenomenal and the damage done to the lung cavity by those little bullets is devestating.

The 80 gr. Remington PSP and the 80 gr. Speer Hotcor are both very good bullets to use in lower velocity loads on deer. They will do anything the much vaunted 85 gr. Sierra will.  I have used both bullets pushed to 3200 fps to take deer that weight up to 150 pounds.  I couldn't ask for more from a bullet to use on small deer.  I would look for a velocity of 2700-2800 fps for a deer load though and keep shots down to around 150 yards or less.

JIM36, I loaded an 80gr remington psp for a 6yr old last year. I contacted Hodgdon and they advised that IMR4895 and H4895 can be interchanged in the light/youth loads as stated on the website and loads could be worked up without difficulty. We (the young man, his dad and myself) agreed on a load for him consisting of IMR4895 30.5gr and the bullet stretched out a bit to 2.65. This load shot real well in his handi, but I have to tell you he is a stout kid. Very tuff. He did real well with the load. A doe at 25-35 yards and a 9 point at 50-75yards I believe. He missed a 6 point at 100. Put both deer down right there. His dad and him practiced shot placement all summer. The bullets did not exit, thus no blood trail from an elevated box. Then again, the deer he did hit went down. The six he missed was seen 2 days later at the same box. I also like 4350 and Hodgdon would not advise on the usage in youth loads. Hope that helps.

Thanks Vince.  The problem I am having now . is finding powder. Sportsmans Whse is now gone, and they haven t had powder for the past 3 to 4 months. All I have in the cabinet is Varget and 4350, and your post advised against the h4350. I ll find some IMR 4895 somewhere in the next week or so.  Thanks again     Jim
