Also, really well built portable shooting benches might go over good. You could build the tops and just install the already made, sturdy, folding legs that are available on the market. There was a guy doing this a few months back on the Ruger Forum and he sold a bunch of them until it became nearly a full time job, then he and his partner quit building them.
Shooting benches is a good idea. Maybe I could find some good plans on the internet for them. Never know maybe I could become a GBO sponser and sell them here on GBO. I think the shipping would be the killer though. Dale

Keep the Ideas coming-
I was thinking of fishing rod racks, free-standing or wall-mount, would there be a market for those?

How would a person go about marketting their own products?

Gun racks. The type that hold then vertical. I could use one that holds about 30 long guns.

Almost every grocery store and many family style sit down restaurants have public bulletin boards available to post items for sale or business cards.  Talk to local landscape supply dealers, greenhouses and garden supply stores about posting fliers at their stores.  Traffic is heavy and costs are low using these avenues.

Okay, enough free advice, from here on out I want a cut of the action.  ;)

I have my cards posted at a few hardware stores along with a few resturants. I get calls from time to time from them. I just got a call the other day from a lady that wanted to replace her ceiling fan with a hanging light. She said she got my card from Wise's resturant. I don't even remember putting my cards there so I must of left them a couple years ago. It only took me an hour to do the job and told her to call me if she needs anything else. Dale

Keep at it Dale.  The woodworking seems to be the way to go.  On the way to one of my hunting spots there is a fellow who builds full size gazebo's and sheds.  I drove down that way 4 times between December and February, and there was a different one every time I went past.  Somebody is buying the dang things.

Here is a shed I built for a customer last spring. Dale

You might also try some novelty items Dale. It has been a long time since I have seen a pair of Stilts for sale anywhere. I had build a set for my 12 year old 11 years ago and they are still holding up as they do dbl duty by holding my car ramps in place so they wont skid on the garage floor.

Stilts, I used a common 96" 2x4 wall stud and took 1' of it off with the chop saw. This was then cut on the diagonal and set aside. The remaining 7' board was centered in my table saw and ripped the entire lenght.
You target your age groups by attaching the diagonal pieces at roughly the knee height of the child. The top handles dont need much, just a quick plane to remove the square corner and a light sanding. My 11yr old now turned 23 will still use them occasionally. She is good at it, they are hilarious and attract attention (especially from kids) quickly.

I almost made more of these at that time in 98' and thought to use the local hardware store on a consignment type of thing but I became concerned about liability issues :-\
I think that you could realize a lot of profit quickly by doing this by keeping a very low inventory at the start to see how well they would sell. You would price your stilts at $15-$20

That is a good idea but I am also worried about liability issues. Some kid falls down and breaks a leg and then their family is living in my house. Dale

I have also always wanted to build kids play houses but the liability issues are always in the back of my head. When it comes to peoples kids the courts don't play. I keep thinking of one nail that I missed, that did not hit the stud. That kid cuts them self on that nail and I am done for. This shed ( pictured above ) I built last spring I was even a little worried about. They have 3 little kids and I checked several times for exposed nails. Dale

Dale, Knives like that sell for a couple of dollars each at fle markets around here, but they sell a lot of them. My daughter and her husbands income come from flea markets and selling on the internet. As a general rule, they say you need to sell at cost plus 100% at a minimum.

The key is finding the right flea market if your going to sell something like this. If there is already a guy there selling them, then I think it's a waist of time. If selling knives is something you like, then I think selling collectable and high quality knives is the best way to go. When I lived in Illinois, one of my neighbors was a seriuos knife collector and seller. The guy made some really good coin on the side. Not only did he sell the collecables, he would also find these small knife makers that hand built high quaility stuff and he would buy say 20 to 30 from them and resell at the knife shows.

Sad to say, but that's a wise thought. Friend of mine was making and installing playgrounds, the expensive kind made of big heavy wooden timbers. Some kid did a triple gainer off a swingset and broke his arm. Parents sued for about 50 times what the kid's injury cost to fix.....
Settled out of court for, if I remember right, $5000 plus my friends lawyer costs.

Our government encourages stupid behavior then it provides mechanisms for those same stupid people to reward themselves financially.

Brilliant,  and we actually vote for these people.

Seems to be an agreement here :-\.  I've a friend who gets those crappy knives from SMKW and sells them, and other stuff, at flea markets.  He averages about $15.00 a knife.  His main customers.....kids.
Scary.

Flea markets are all about price, not quality. There is or will always be some one selling at $1 cheeper
