remington 700 Accuracy...
« on: February 01, 2009, 02:33:13 PM »
Okay, for the last year ONLY please, have Remington 700's been satisfying to you who have bought them as far as accuracy?
Let us know which caliber and what particular model letter designation please.
What size of group did you get with factory ammo OR your handloads?
No need to give load data.
 Just a good ideal please?
 Thanks Folks,
 Jeff

It doesn't matter what our results are in the end...yours could differ greatly depending on quality of barrel, trigger, ammo used and so on. Even the same exact models shoot different.

I bought 3 that are within the past 2 years and all are tack drivers shooting around .5" @ 100 yards and that's with factory hornady ammo(168 HP and A-Max), factory Remington 165 sciroccos I use for Deer/Black Bear, Black Hills 168 HP, and the cheap stuff is the most accurate(American Eagle 150 FMJ for a cheaper day at the range). I have 2 many other hobbies which take up most of my time so reloading and finding the best results aren't a necessity. If my rifles didn't like any factory stuff I'd definitely get into it but I've never had a 700 that didn't shoot great out of the box.

Wal there is an SPS Varmint .22-250 that with some really old RP ammo I've had laying around for at least 10-12 years did barely over a quarter inch at 100 for the first three shots. I used it to sight in and didn't have much left but the two groups fired with it were exceptional. With Hornady factory 50s it's staying right at a half inch.

And the SPS Varmint .223 that has only been fired with some old hand loads made up for another Remington Varmint rifle an VLS that easily stays around 0.8" with that ammo. Since I've not tried any other can't say what it really will do once I try to work up some or shoot factory in it.

And the Model Seven Predator in .17 Fireball that shoots half in and less using RP factory ammo.

And my newest Model Seven Predator in .223 Remington that like the SPS Varmint has so far been fed only the same old reloads and which also is shooting around 0.75" or so with them.

Or the Limited edition LSS .257 Weatherby Magnum Model 700 that has only been fired with three loads so far one a very old box of Weatherby factory ammo and a couple of reloads left over from when I had a Vanguard in the chambering. So far it has shot around 1.5" or so but as I said it's had no work done with it yet and only three old loads tried so far.

Those are the only ones shot so far that are in that age range you ask about.

I have bought 2 700s in the last 1.5 yrs.: SPS Varmint .22-250 and LVSF in .204. Both shoot easy MOA with factory ammo (Fed. Prem. 55gr.NBT and Rem. Accutip 40gr., respectively.) No complaints, although the little .204 seems to be opening up some after a couple hundred rounds.

I bought a new .30-06 ADL about 5 months ago at Walmart.  It shot less than MOA right out of the box with Remington 165 grain Core-Lokt factory ammo.  I've never seen a Model 700 that wouldn't shoot less than MOA.

You just can't beat a Remington.

The SPS Varmint in .223 is the newest 700 I own that has been fired. Prior to the SPS I have owned 4 other 700s (VS , VLS , P and LTR) that were extremely gratifying in the level of accuracy obtainable. My last outing with the SPS produced this:

Was the first 5 shot group fired with the SPS in a B&C stock and the first time firing this N133 load. I bought a 700 VLS thumbhole varminter last Oct which I have not fired yet.

My Rem .223 Tactical with the Hogue stock is dated as being made in Oct. of 08, so it is of very recent production. Although I've only shot it a few times with factory loads and didn't measure the groups or keep the targets (long story), I can tell that it is going to be a very accurate rifle. First thing I'm going to do to improve the already great accuracy is get the X-Mark Pro trigger a bit lighter.

I no longer own this 243 Remington 700 SPS Varimint but here is a target I shot at 300 yards with it. The ammo used was Hornady 58 grain V-max. This group measures 7/8". When I was shooting this rifle at 100 yards it really was one hole with 3 shot groups being 3/8" or less with the same ammo. Dale

I only have two.  My 700 VSSF does very good with factory Winchester Ballistic Tips or Hornady V-Max and better with SMK or A-Max hand loads.   I just got 700 5R, have gone thru the breakin process and am working up loads with SMK's.  This thing is amazing.

I have four Remington's; the 721 in .270 Winchester averages 2.5" @ 100 yds. My Remington 788 in .222, Remington 700 ADL in 25-06, and 700 BDL in 7MM-08 will easily go 1 MOA or under.

As far as I am concerned the Remingtons are hard to beat out of the box.  All of mine shoot MOA without having to spend days at the range finding the right load.  The sendero and SPS tactical I expect this kind of accuracy from but the BDL's shoot almost as well and look good doing it.

Here is my Remmy 5R (with cheaper glass waiting for Sightron SIII to come in).

Here is what it will do with 178gr A-Max for 5 shots at 100yds.

Here are some 200 meter groups with it during load development.  Some groups are not 5 shots due to this.
