Help me make the choice!
« on: August 10, 2003, 07:16:03 AM »
I sold my stainless encore a couple of weeks ago due to it being stainless  . I wanted to put a 12 gauge on it for turkey and the stainless just seems to stick out. I looked into having the gun dipped but that was to much money :( .It was a 209x50. On Monday, I will either pick up a blue 209x45 with wood or a blue 209x50 with rynite. The wood seems lighter to me but I haven't weighed them. I like the feel of the 209x45 but after reading on here about the 45, I am having second thoughts. The 50 I sold shot well but I was wanting to let my 11 year shot the 45 and felt it might be a little less recoil. If the 45 is going to be a pain to load and get good groups, I will just go with the 50. Any help would be greatly appricated. Don

doninva, I get solid 2 in. groups with mine and sometimes in the 1 in. range, I just let my 7 yr. old son shoot it with 55 grs. of 777 fffg and he hit the same as me with 75 grs, I wanted to see if he could hunt with it, and I think he can. I think(from watching the boards) that the .50 is a tad bit more accurate, but my .45 will do the job quite nicely. I did this with a 175 gr. knight red hot. Make sure you get the 1 in 28 twist barrel. Hope this helps.

If you get a 45 cal. make sure it has the 1:28 twist in the barrel and not the 1:20 twist. The 1:20 twist don't group good. At least it didn't with me. I sent it back and they sent me one with the 1:28, I haven't shot it yet to see how it will do. But I will be shooting it in the next week or two.

Thanks guys, I will check the 45 to see that it's 1-28 and not 1-20. The 209x50 I had shot great so I have a big decission to make. I can get the 45 with wood stock but they only have the 50 in the synthetic so weight might be the decideing factor. Don

Well, I went to the shop today to get the encore. I told the owner I would like to make sure the 209x45 was a 1-28. We couldn't find anything on the gun or in the liteature that said one way or another. He said to go into his office and call Thompson. I called and got one of the "techs". I gave him the seriel number and after being gone for about 5 minutes, he told me they weren't sure which twist it was( very surprising) but he told me to push the rod down the bore and let the rifling twist it one rotation and if the rod went down 1 1/4" it was a 1-20 and if it went less than 3/4", it was a 1-28. We tried this but it didn't work out to well. I bought the gun anyway. It has some beautiful wood and it felt great. If it doesn't shoot right, I will be back on the phone for a new barrel. Don

If the rod turned less than a full turn, it's 1:28 (provided you had a snug patch on the jag - and you have to use a rod with a handle that allows the rod to freely rotate).

Hope you like your new rifle.
