Barrel stubbing question.
« on: October 21, 2008, 10:51:14 AM »
I have been read a bit about stubbing a barrel. I may have the chance to buy a couple of stainless .357 bull barrels that are 18 inches and the twist is 1 in 20. My question is would these be good stubbing candidates or just go with the barrel replacement program. I'd like to have something a little different but cost will also be a factor. I did read the FAQs' and saw the article by trotterlg.

1:20" is kind slow for .35 cal barrels, the Handi 357mag is 1:18¾" and the 35 Whelen is 1:16", both considered on the slow side.  Cost for stubbing that I've seen is $250-$300 for the work plus the cost of the donor underlug and barrel, I just had a 6.5x55 done by Oregunsmithing for $300 plus the shilen blank I bought and a used barrel I included for the underlug. He also does reboring which I've had done in a couple custom chamberings, cost likely ends up about the same since you have to provide a barrel to start with too.

If you can get them for about 30-40 bucks it may be worth the effort if they are good quality.  Also depends on what diameter they are in, at least the breachend.  Larry
