Winchester 100 ?
« on: October 05, 2008, 08:43:23 AM »
Anyone own or use one ? How do you like it ?.  I bought one two weeks ago some kinda of speial DL that Winchester didn"t catalog.(different checkering and better wood)When I shot it wouldn"t pull the shells out. Found a good gunsmith, he did all sorts of things to it and now it works great and shoots fine. Sure is a pretty thing, what kind of scope would you put on it. I might try hunting with it this fall.

Owned one for a very short time long long ago when Sears was still in the gun selling business. I bought it at Sears just before hunting season one year and a box or maybe a couple boxes of ammo. I sighted it in using factory irons and took it hunting that year. I didn't get a shot but did notice the rear sight was loose and just wouldn't stay put. It kept changing POI on me. I took it back and got a refund under the very liberal refund policy they had in those days. I've never seriously considered one since.

It really was one of the few Winchester rifles I've owned and one of only two .308 Winchester chambered rifles I've ever owned. I didn't keep the other all that long either altho it really had no problems it just didn't really do anything my .30-06 didn't do better so it wound up as trade material for something else I wanted more at the moment. That has happened a lot over the years. BTW it was a SS snythetic Model Seven Remington.

I owned a Model 100 chambered for .308 in the early 1970s. It had some serious problems that Winchester did make right. The rifle handled great but I never got any groups better than 4 MOA out of it, so down the road went the 100. I just discarded the scope I bought and used on it (finally wore out and would not hold adjustments after 35 years of use) and then for for many years on my slug throwing shotguns, a 2 3/4x Redfield Widefield. I currently like the Leupold Rifleman series in 2-7 power. They are relatively inexpensive, not too large, have decent optics, hold their zero as the power is shifted and take the recoil of large calibers such as the .338WM and the .375H&H with no problem. Mine has seen about 1000 rounds between these two rifles and it holds it zero just fine.

Why don't you put a Bushnell Holo Sight on yours. It mount using a weaver base and works great very fast for jumping or running whitetails. I just installed one on My Ruger deerfield 44 cal semiauto. Can't wait to blast that big buck I keep seeing that always just jumps up when least expected.

I almost bought a 100 awhile back. How is your trigger???? how accurate is your rifle. Does it take reloads ok????

I spoke too soon ! the rifle is one of the most accurate Single shot semi I ever owned. Darn my bad luck ! It shoots great but it won"t eject. Some times you have to pull very hard on the bolt slide handle to get it open. After acoupe of dozen trys and choice words. I packed it up and took it a smith in Hillsboro ,Mo. He says the chamber is scored and is going to run a finish reamer in it but from the looks of the cases it maybe too late. I will just wait and see. Bhoo Hoo :'(

Forgot the trigger is fine. I put a shoe on it that distributes the pull, makes a lot of difference. I wasn't kidding about the accuracy, I put 5 sdhoys in less than an inch several times. How the smith can get it working.
