25-20, anybody shoot one?
« on: October 03, 2008, 11:27:30 AM »
I have an original (almost a century old) Marlin 1894 chambered in 25-20WCF that I enjoy shooting with cast bullets. The bore has a few rough spots in it, so accuracy is not the best. Maybe 2 or 3 inches for 5 shots at 50 yards, bench rest.

Does anyone here shoot a newer Marlin or other rifle in this caliber?

I am toying with the idea of getting a single shot made up with a good barrel to see what this little 25 is capable of. Maybe a Low Wall or Ruger #3. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks.

I currently own two .25-20s, one a "new" Marlin 1894CL, the other a BF handgun with 15" barrel.  The Marlin shoots groups in the 1.5-2 moa range scoped, but the BF will shoot aggregates in the .6s and .7s.  One big difference is the bullets used - the Marlin shoots the flat-pointed 60, 75 and 86-grained bullets which were never intended for high accuracy.  The BF shoots best with 75-grain V-Max or 87-grain TNT bullets, both of which have reputations as highly accurate bullets.  Another difference is the BF having a minimum chamber versus the larger chamber in the repeater.

Actually I had intended to build a high accuracy .25-20 rifle, but the BF came up and I've been very pleased with it.   :)

Sorry, that is the old falling block action now sold by EA Brown.  It was originally designed in the 1980s by a silhouette shooter as a "cheap" alternative to the T/C.  It didn't turn out that way - but it is one fine SS handgun.

Really miss my old Remington M25, but it had terrrible headspace.  Since that, neither my 94CL, nor my T/C factory 10" barrel are for sale.  Even factory loads with open sights on the T/C will cut cloverleaves with Win factory shells.  Velocity difference between the 94 and the TC is a whopping 4fps.  Folks should never be without a good .25-20.

The second is a custom left hand T-bolt single shot...

The 25/20 is a wonderfull little small game round!

There are other bolt action production models of the 25-20: Winchester 43, Savage Sporter, and Kimber of Oregon Model 82. I have one of the few Kimbers that were made. They are all single shot actions. The Win and Savage are repeaters.

My Kimber of Oregon will shoot 1/2 MOA at 100 yards with either a Sierra 75gr HP or Sierra 87gr SP bullet. You just can't do that with the lever guns and their bullet limitations.
