real world difference between 6mm TCU & 6x45
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:52:55 AM »
well i think i have settled on one of these two     have pretty much eliminated the 256 win mag & derivatives

is there any real world difference between these two    never mind the case forming    just the shooting & any real significant

velocity differences

i will  be shooting  70-75 grain bullets only    so say from a 21 inch barrel will they both drive them close to 3000  or is one truly

much faster (like 150 fps)  or is one truly more inherently accurate & easier to load for

from all the articles i have been able to find  i dont see a huge advantage of one over the other

Dunno about the 6x45 but I don't think you'll safely drive those 70/75 grain bullets that fast from a 6TCU at least I never did. I couldn't quite reach 3000 with 65s in mine and it was 22". I think you're expecting more than it can safely deliver.

sorry that was just an example      so  were you satisfied with it's performance ?

as long as it shoots  i dont care if it's  2600 fps  or 3000 fps

max shots are 125 yards   on my piece of ground  lots of timber

Loved it and wish I'd held on to it. I had a 15" and a 22" both from the Custom Shop. Both were easily sub MOA shooters. H335 is THE POWDER for this round. Nothing I ever found beat the Hornady 65 V-Max in mine.

i think it or the 6x45 is what i am going to go with   the 65 grain bullets will probably do it   maybe not the v max though

i think i have stated before  we have developed a real stray dog problem here    i live right in between two lakes here in northeast

oklahoma & it seems the lake rats also bring therir animals with them & either turn them loose deliberately or just lose track of them

either way sometimes they need taking care of if they stick around too long   have been looking for something a bit quieter than the

6 tcu but i am sure i can load them down a bit under 20 grains

some are just too big for me to feel good about using my k hornet   over 70 pounds i would guess

need a new toy anyhow

thanks for your help

I went with the standard 6x45mm because it's just a load and shoot where the TCU needs fireforming to befor you have brass ready to load.

Just looking at some load data for the standard 6x45mm Sierra has 70gr running at 3100fps out of a 24" barrel and Steve Timms article in Wolfe's "Wildcat Cartridges", a reprint fromm Handloader Mag. shows 3000fps for the 75gr Nosler out of a 22"barrel.  I use mine as a calling rig on coyote and I'm a fur saver so I'm running 55gr NBT'ss and 55gr Blitzkings at 3350fps 22" 3 groove Pac-Nor.

i think i am going to do the 6x45  not that the fire forming  is a big deal but it seems like it is overall a bit simpler & plenty accurate enough for my needs   thanks all for the input    i will post some evidence when it is done
