Never shot a .223 before, but i ordered one and the barrel has 1-9" twist. What range of bullet weights should i be using with this twist?

I've shot 45's up to 62.  They all shot great.  I am sticking with the 52 gr SMK.  They shoot the best.

You really should be good to 69 gn. bullets. My prefference is 50 gn. bullets for groundhogs and 55`s for coyote.

My .223 shoots 50gr bullets okay and shoots very small groups with 55gr Nosler ballistic tips and 55gr V-max bullets.

My 1 in 9 twist shoots 40 grain ballistic tips well most of the time.Seems there are days they don't group as well.My two favorites for this rifle are the 55 grain ballistic tip and the 55 grain Hornady sxsp.I've read the sxsp's may come apart in the faster twist barrels but have had great results with with a max load of h4895.They are very explosive on target and every bit as accurate as the B.T.'s....cheaper too.

I have a Harrington and Richardson Handi-Rifle in .223 Remington that has a 1:9 twist barrel.  It definitely prefers 60 grain to 69 grain bullets, shooting sub MOA with 60 gr Partitions, 62 gr. FMJ, and 69 gr Sierra MatchKing HP's.  I suppose it depends on the individual rifle, but mine doesn't shoot 55 grain bullets nearly as well as the aforementioned.

I made the mistake of buying 500 Remington 55 gr. FMJ bullets in bulk without having tested them first.  I have shot about 100 of them and do not group worth a darn.  In fact, "They don't group, they pattern!" >:(

My rifles shoot other bullets just great but not those Rem. FMJs.  The take home lesson for me is "Never buy large lots of bullets until they have been tested and proven their worth in my rifle."

My 26" 1/9 AR-15 shoots anything over 62gr pretty well, but 69gr and up to 78gr group best.  The Army Markmanship Unit is using the 78gr bullet now, but they're also using 1/7 barrels.

In my experience, buying cheap FMJ bullets is far more likely to "have the thing shoot like crap".  If you really want to see your accuracy potential, spend the money on decent bullets.  While some of the super thin jacketed bullets may come apart at maximum velocity in the 1 in 9" twist, you should not have any problems with Nosler Ballistic Tips, non SX Hornady, or Sierra non Blitz bullets.  Chances are you should experience good results with 55 gr and 60 gr bullets.  For a 1 in 9" twist, I would start with the 55 and 60gr Ballistic Tips and the 60 gr Hornady Hollow Points.

My savage had a 1 in 9 twist and it loved 40 grain bullets.  It definatly shot them better than the 69 grain MK
