brass bar stock
« on: July 15, 2008, 05:30:46 PM »
Does anyone have a cheaper solution than ordering brass stock from Jantz or another supplier?  I went to some hobby stores and could not find any.  I was thinking about going to a scrap yard and asking around.

I am building some Scandinavian style knives with FOS and Lauri blanks and some traditional Green River blanks.

About the only thing I can get locally around here are brass pins(welding supply house) and brass tubing(plumbing supply).  I did a google on brass bar stock supplier and got a lot of hits, so you can go that route if you wish.  Personally, I don't think the various knife supply houses charge a lot for brass.  The shipping sucks, but that applies everywhere.

Check out your local scrap yards, thats where I get mine. Sometimes come home with big blocks that I can cut to size. A little more work but much cheaper and can get any size that way. Sometimes you can find stainless for guards there too, I've found new pieces with the type of steel stamped on it. Knifemakers use small pieces for guards so whats scrap to others is usefull to us. Just a little chunk of cut off will make several knife guards.

Yeah, I don't need much at all.  My uncle-in-law is dabbling in taxidermy and I asked him to leave me some antler scraps from some of the mounts that he makes.  He totally misunderstood what I was asking.  All that I wanted was pieces to make spacers with...he thought whole antlers.

Anyway, Jantz and others have okay prices for the stock itself, but you are exactly right about shipping.  $7 for bar stock is one thing, $7 plus $6.95 shipping is another.

Going to try a scrap yard.  Otherwise will order.

If there are any machine shops in your area they often have small drop off's and leftovers.
