Undo the brake?
« on: June 12, 2008, 03:05:21 PM »
Would it be possible to have a smith fill the brake holes on this S&W revolver? Or could I maybe special order one from S&W without porting?

http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001&productId=76443&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=15707&isFirearm=Y

I haven't shot this gun. But I have shot the S&W460 and the worst part of the experience for me was the concussion shock wave, which I contributed to the brake it had. My sinuses felt like I had a bloody nose after each shot (heavy load CORBON's).
I think I would trade the brake for a little more recoil. But that might be just me. :)

Okee - welcome aboard.

The best thing to do is find out from S&W if you can order one without the ports.  Yes, muzzle brakes reduce recoil but at a price.  See what S&W has to say.  Good luck.  Mikey.

Okee, I have tried to open your link to the S&W site but I keep getting an error message.

What gun are you looking at?

As far as the concussion shock wave, the S&W 460 Mag is worse than the 500 Mag. I have both a 460 and 500 Mag, and I know for experience. The S&W 460 has less felt recoil than the 500 Mag.

Redhawk1,

Try this link:
http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001&productId=76443&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=15707&isFirearm=Y

If this link doesn't work, you can go to the S&W web site and see the gun. Its the newest .500 magnum. :o
The brake is not an insert, like the other models they have out.

Actually there are three other versions of the 500 Mag as far as the compensators are concerned besides the one you have shown. The is one that has the compensator built in, one that is removable and can exchange for lead or jacketed bullets and the PC model has a totally different compensator.

If you want a non-comp'ed S&W 500 Mag, Look for the 5 inch John Ross version. http://john-ross.net/store.php

Also look at the BFR in 500 mag, if you want a non-compensated model.

But no you can't have the holes filled.

I wish S&W would quit making there 460 and 500 Mag with compensators. My 4 inch has a custom end cap installed, so it is not compensated and I love it.

Redhawk1, sure would appreciate you posting some pics of your 4" gun with no porting, please?

That'ld work, it is in my profile. My interesst is because Illinois doesn't alllow any handgun for deer season, unless it has at least a 4" barrel, not counting the compensator? I was thinking, maybe this would be legal?

S.B. you e-mail address is hidden in your profile. Mine is Surfish7@aol.com

Also the only bad thing is, S&W quit making the 460 end caps that was used to make the 500 Mag end cap. But I think you can take one of the compensators to a machines and have them make a end cap for you.
