Myself I am afraid of that heavy recoil.  I'm not recoil proof like some are.

That is normal recoil of a handgun in 45-70, my Encore in 500 Mag recoils a lot more than that. ;D

If you are use to it, it is not a problem at all. I was at the range today and fired 50 rounds or hot loaded 370 gr. and 50 rounds of 440 gr. hot loads.
So in my opinion it is a good thing.. ;)

I don't LIKE heavy recoil any more ,I have arthritis  in my hands. I don't say any one should NOT have such a gun, only that they MUST be able to controll it when shooting! I see guys at the range shooting them at the berm and throwing up clouds of dirt. They giggle and point at the cloud saying "Do you SEE THAT?". When I ask them to HIT a spot on the hill, they usually miss by a foot or more. I videoed one guy that was a regular at the range. When he saw how BAD he was flinching,he sold the gun. I shot "sillywets" with some big kickers years ago. I found the .44 mag about the most I really needed in a revolver or TC contender.

You need to come with me to the range, you pick the spot I will hit it. I am a serious handgun hunter, I put thousands of rounds thought all my handguns. I was shooting my 4 inch S&W 500 mag yesterday at 20 and 25 yards off hand. I was keeping all my shots in a 3 inch circle with iron sights. I was practicing quick shot's  for my up and coming black bear handgun hunt to Maine.

Yea there are some guys that have big bore handguns and don't shoot them well, but I know just as many with small bore handguns that don't shoot them well either. Matter of fact, I had 3 guys next to me shooting handgun's at the range yesterday that could not hit the target at 7 yards. One guys shot all over the paper and the others said wow, that is some good shooting, I just had to laugh. I then let loose with 5 quick shots from my 500 Mag at 20 yards, and all my shots were in that 3 inch circle. And at 20 yards the 50 caliber holes could be seen, and the guys came over to see what I was shooting and ask how I shot so well with such a big handgun. I told them lots of practice and proper shooting technic.

I can hit what I shoot at with my handguns, but as I get older I find that I don't need all of the recoil that I used to take in stride...Going full  circle, I guess...

hey Tom, does "GOLDEN AGE" ring any bells!
Redhawk, I believe that YOU can do what you say. I USED to be able to put a clip full of hand loads into an inch at 25 yards. OFF hand with a 45 auto.! Got movie $ doing it for the wife and me. These days I can just make the slide work. It's NOT just hand gunners that do this berm blasting. Some guys just HAVE to use the latest magnum but will not take the time to learn to shoot it.  Consider ME as one of those "Grumpy Old Men" that recall the good old days.

I am sure as I am getting older, recoil will not be as fun, but then I will down load to a more comfortable level, but I still like them big holes.  ;D

it is a point of frustration for me now that I have the money to buy the biggest I can tolerate them not as well as when I had all muscle no pains and no money... life is funny like that in a tick you off sort of way.. aint it ?
LOL
I have some boomers and will occasionally load them up and more often load them down.... and I will shoot the lighter ones more than the heavier ones unless I get this little arthritis thing cleared up completely, ... till then... I will try to shoot them enough to shoot them well and if iI cannot I will adapt untill I can do it as well as I want to .. and that is pretty well...
I can handle the really heavy recoil, but am not sure it is not making my aches and pains that need surgerizing a bit worse when I go full tilt boogie with the big stuff...
we shall see....
grip configuration is getting more important to me too... it seems...

I shoot everything from subcalibers to the big boomers and I'm one of the older generation. Recoil is part of the trade off for the extra power. Gun of choice to play with this past weekend was a Ruger Blackhawk in 30 caliber carbine. This weekend it will be a BFR in 45/70 with 465 grain bullets. I shoot different guns because I enjoy the change up. It is as much fun to shoot a squirrel with a .14 caliber as with a .475 to me, dead is dead. Why not enjoy them all if you can, and leave what you do not like alone. Everything is not for everyone, for those of us that can enjoy it all life is so good.

How true. I used to love to shoot my .480 with stout charges and 400 grain cast bullets. I too love those big holes on the paper. But my body is weakening and my mind is getting stronger, it tells me to let someone else enjoy it. Then again, who knows.. I may luck up on an Encore barrel for the .480 and be almost back where I was. I'm not adverse to shooting a stout load if someone offers, and I have yet to download my .44 mag or my .45 Colt. I ain't dead yet, but there are some chamberings that just don't appeal to me anymore..... Shoot, I never thought I'd own a .308 rifle , or a .22-250 pistol, either!

I used to be tough... but I got over it.  It took quite some time, but I finally figured out that being tough hurts.

and this increased recoil is a good thing?

Not the recoil but the muzzle energy and knock down power, especially when hunting dangerous game.

I'm 67 now, have shot my 16" 45-70 Contender, with a brake, since the late 60's.( I think that was when I bought it) I still shoot it some, it's not as bad as my 460 Encore which has no brake. I prefer my 7-08 most of the time now, and really enjoy my 6.8 for a lot of shooting. My wrists have arthritis now, but I grin and bear it.

The most dangerous game I hunt is a White tail deer, or maybe an occasional bobcat or coyote....
