45/70 range report

took my new(to me) 45/70 22"  open sights, barrel to the range today for the first time. 50 yards all shots. Had it on my plastic stock
Hornady 325gr leverevalution, fired 6 shots getting it Oed then shot 5 rounds in about 4"circle 2 touching 3"high. all the time wondering who i disliked enough to give this barrel to, i don't think
i have ever had a gun kick that hard.
I had saved the 405gr rem. for last because i thought they would kick the worse.
they shot about 4" higher than the Hornady 325gr.
lowered the sights and shot 5 rounds in a 2" circle, they did not kick near as hard as the 325's
I think i can live with 5 shots in a 2" circle, think i will keep it and stay with the 405 rem. have it shooting 3" high at 50 yards should be right on at 100 yards

Try taking a plastic bag with about 1 1/2 pound of lead shot , slide it into an old sock then tuck all this in the butt stock , you will be suprised at how much it tames the recoil .

Also if you handload you can turn it into a pussycat .  ;)

I have tried it both ways.The perceived recoil in a wood stock is less than in a synthetic stock.

Limbsaver makes a prefit pad for the syn stock, #10018, I put one on the monte carlo stock set of my 20ga TDC turkey gun, fits great, works great. ;)

I also  tried out my new 45-70,a Buffalo Classic, today. Bought some factory loads in order to try it out.  Holy %$^%!  My shoulder will hurt tomorrow! Got to hurry and get some brass for some milder reloads.

I think the wood stock would help being heavier.
i think i will try it with wood stock and shot in the stock.
the wood stocks i have, have pretty thick pads, one has a thick soft pad.
The 405gr. rem were not bad at all think with just a wood stock it would be fine , just a push straight back.
the 325 Hornady would make the barrel jump about 4-5" straight up.
I thought the 405s would have the bad kick, and they were 5-7" inches higher than the 325 holding the same.
When i got it Oed with the 405 it was just making the hole bigger every shot, 3" high at 50 yards, should make it maybe 1" high at 100 or maybe dead on.
Thanks for the help guys will end up trying it all.

I'm 67  and my 45-70 killed my shoulder until I put the Choate Varmit stock on it. Can now shoot it from the bench with no pain.............

I have my wood stock stuffed with lead and usually use a shoulder pad and even heavy Marlin loads are no problem.  If you reload a 300 Laser cast over 14gr of
trail Boss is highly accurate and a real pussycat if you're just punching paper.  They are still a lot of fun.
