Question on 30-30 ammo
« on: May 10, 2008, 08:41:12 AM »
I don't have my 30-30 yet but, my K-Mart has a clearance on American Eagle 150gr 30-30 ammo for $10.00 even. Is this ammo worth me buying?

my 30-30 has open sights so I am not too picky about what I shoot. never had a problem with the american eagle but I believe it is made by federal. keep an eye when remington runs their core-lokt rebates I go to dicks sporting goods and end up paying 4.99 a box. I havent reloaded for my 30-30 in a while because I stocked up on the remington ammo

Okay, Here we go! IMO corlokt in .30-30 just doesn't work.  Unless they've improved it, it is too slow to open up and leaves you running around the woods looking for a punctured deer.  I use Winchester Supreme Ballistic Tips in my faster rifles and the  50 plus year old ever faithful Winchester Silvertips in my .30-30s.  I really don't care what they cost, I'm not chucking them into tin cans for plinking.  I experienced 2 bullet failures in two years with corlokt.  One out of a .30-30 and the other out of a Rem 700 30-06.  Both punched pencil holes through the deer.  Left no blood, didn't knock them down.  We were lucky to find them.  End of Rem ammo for us.  WINCHESTER SUPREME BALLISTIC TIPS!!!!!!!!
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

My experience is a bit different from petemi's, but first, I need to ask, "Which CL-the 150 or 170?"  It might matter.  My Handi dotes on both bullets on paper.  I've used both on whitetails-with happy experiences.  I'm extremely impressed with the 150 gr. CL for general work on whitetails.  It's consistantly accurate in my gun and the bullet seems perfectly balanced for its intended mission, i.e. I have yet to recover one, even on quartering shots and they seem to open adequately for quick, humane kills without ruining meat.

With respect to "penciling through" deer, I've no reason to doubt anyone's personal experience in such things.  It happens--sometimes with even much more sophisticated bullets.  My experience with the 150 gr. CL's is that they tend to leave a very modest exit hole (lung shots) that could mislead one to believe they're not "do'n the job".  Inside the critter, it might be a different story.  Personally, I've no problems with the performance of .30-30 CL bullets on deer size critters.  In fact, it's my favorite projectile for that job.

he was only asking about the cheap clearance price that is why I mentioned the remington bullets. never had a problem with my core-lokts or for that matter the ballistic tips that I reload in my other rifles but look at all the neagtive comments about them in other forums. I say go ahead and try them went to walmart and cheapest was federal for 12.97 a box. you will need plenty of bullets to get sighted in and break in your new gun. let us know how it shoots.

Most of the time you can buy the winchester or remington brands from 10-13 dollars a box....I have used both with excellent results...

I stick with the silver tip 30-30 too.

The wifes 3030 runs on handloaded 170gr federal handloads , I like that bullet , works well , we used to run store bought 170 rem in it , never had a problem with those and I have never used American eagle 3030 shells but for the most part the rest of American eagles line has been good to me when I wanted a cheaper factory load , I would not be afraid to try it out on deer
