Waiting for the brown truck (Not no more!!!)
« on: May 02, 2008, 10:54:59 AM »
Stuck at home in a ground blizzard, PU is stuck in the ditch.   Reading through older posts on this site has been very insightful.  Its been two weeks tomorrow that I sent a couple of receivers and a barrel back to the folks at Gardner (at least for a while longer it seems).  I thought I recognized that area from my long ago days at Ft Devins, MA.  First time really away from home for a Midwest raised young soldier.  Good folks and great subs & grinders as I recall.   Anyway, one receiver is having a HB 204 barrel fitted and the other has a defective 223 HB barrel.  Also got a set of laminated wood & fore end.   Realizing it'll be at least another couple of weeks before I see them again (if I'm really lucky), is it a waste of time to follow up at this point.  It took several calls to actually get thru to their CS.  The lady I spoke to was very helpful, and indicated the 204 barrel as available as was the laminated wood.  So in theory, availability isn't an issue.   What is procedure?   Sweat it out blindly or make contact again?   They have a phone # & e-mail address.  Should I expect verification from them without a prompt?

They don't send notifications of shipping, but you can call or email and ask for tracking info if it's been shipped, they'll give you an estimate of when it should be done if it's not yet. Toll free number and email address are in the FAQs.

I sent a receiver back 3 weeks ago to have a .223 barrel fitted.  I called Wednesday and they said it was in shipping ready to go out.  So, I'm waiting for the big brown truck also.  Great turn around time.

I sent my defective frame and three barrels back on 4/17/08 and called them 3 days ago (Thursday) to check on them. Gordon told me that they were in the process of fitting my barrels to a new frame. I asked if he could go ahead and fit another barrel, a 223 Rem. Bull barrel and add another wood forend. He said he would do it and I gave him the Credit Card info. Hopefully the big brown truck will show up before too much longer! You folks have ruined me, I bought my first handi just six months ago and now have four barrels for it! I guess you could say I'm a Handi-holic.

Make that 5.  Buffalo classic went back because it would not stay closed.  While it's there I am asked for a 22-250 24" bull barrel (they said they might have them in stock soon).  They probably received mine on Friday.

Ok, make it Six.................Sent my 308 receiver in for fitting to a lovely 45-70 barrel.  I asked for the "trigger job"and mentioned that the barrel release lever was sticking at the bottom at times.  Jennifer called me and informed me the barrel latch was broken and I needed to send the 308 bull barrel to her and have it refitted.  That was about a week ago.

SWOBT............still waitin on brown truck

Ummm, seven.  Heavy bbl 17 HMR went back because it didn't hold a decent group.  Getting 22 Mag and a 22 LR barrels fitted while it's there.  Also ask for the trigger job.

Sure looks like the crew at H&R won't be short of work for awhile.   i can remember the first H&R I got a good look at.  An old boy up in the sand hills north of town was pulled up beside my father-in-law and me out looking for pheasants.   Dad never knew a stranger, and this guy wanted to talk cows.  Well, that made him a natural old buddy and I was looking inside the PU and saw this "working" rifle beside the driver.  When I could, I asked him about it.  The wood was sort of beat up as I recall, but it had a really sharp Leupold scope on it.  He said he kept it by the back door when home and it had made him some $ that year.  Turned out he had a hard-headed Shetland pony that kept kicking down fences and busting gates, and he knew it had to go.   He was debating about taking it to the sale barn.  It finally went through the last gate and got cut pretty bad, so he took it out to a gully and put it down.  As it turned out, he shot more coyotes over that dead horse (they were bringing pretty fair prices for hides then) and made more than he could ever have sold the horse for.   That was where the the $ for the scope came from.   That was my introduction to these Handirifles.    Then came that HB .223 and then that Ultra with a .270 a barrel, and a couple of rim fire .17s and than darn 45-70.    Lord help me if a 7-08 shows up.....Plus now I've got an extra .270 barrel

Add me to the list.  I sent a receiver in for a 357, 44mag, and 45 colt barrels.

I don't mind the wait, I just wish they would call and let me know they got it.  No way to trace priority mail through the USPS.

I did call Monday.  Originally someone at H&R told me they would be receiving 24" bull barrel 22-250 barrels. He even gave me the part number and told me "just write it on the barrel order form".  Monday the lady who answered the phone said that was a brand new barrel for 2008 and they weren't going to have in the barrel accessory program..  Guess I need to drop another $20.00 for the fluted barrel.

But she did agree to add "make trigger better" to the work order when they fix it so it stays closed.

Yet ANOTHER waiting for the Big Brown...
« Reply #13 on: May 06, 2008, 05:29:04 PM »
Sent my Buffalo Classic receiver back to have a .500 S&W barrel and a fluted .204 fitted to it.  Actually, I originally wanted a .38-55, but got a call from the nice lady and said that they didn't have any.....
UPS stopped by the house this afternoon, left a note on the door.  Not likely I'll be around tomorrow for their second 'attempt', either.  This is going to drive me nuts!

The Big Brown Truck arrived yesterday.  28 day turnaround time.

I got a .223 barrel, trigger job, and a forend.

The only odd part is that there isn't a sling swivel stud.

Finally cornered the Brown...he didn't seem too happy that I'd put in an address change and had them drop it off at the store where I work.
Overall, at the moment, I'm pleased.  Looking down the bore of that .500, though, makes me wonder 'what was I thinkin'.....
Tracking information would be VERY COOL, as well as notification that it'd been shipped and received.

:o Aargh!!the brown truck came and no one was home!!!   That makes one day short of 21 days, counting transit time; not bad for being in the middle of fly-over country.  Will have to try the deliver to a different address, as someone has to sign of the package..Going to be a long weekend.

Did the deliver to a different address option, then just couldn't wait...Ran out to the brown truck nest and had them grab it of the local delivery truck.  Fewer hands would touch it, so fewer chances of Mr Murphy.   Not to worry, it was packed really well.  The folks at H&R actually assembled the green lami stock on the re barreled receiver and shipped in a normal new product box.  Even included the fore end bolt and stock bolt.   The guys in the office were surprised at how good the green lami stock looked (how many work places can you open a long skinny box and all they want to know is "what caliber?") the repaired barrel was well protected in bubble wrap inside a smaller barrel(?) box.  Both were secured inside the outer shipping box.  Obviously they still have folks on the shipping dock who take pride in their work.   Now to get some glass on them and see if they shoot as well as they look.   More to follow.  Overall, a day short of 21 days, including shipping.  Great turn-around time.

H&R just called!  BC is scheduled for repair this week (they received it 5/5).

Bad news is they don't have any more of the 24" bull barrels in 22-250  :'( (they all went on production guns).
So I forked over the additional $30.00 to get the 22-250 24"  fluted bull barrel.  ;D

:o I am tickled pink reading all the wonderful things H&R is doing for ya. I am not so thrilled of reading how much stuff goes back to them because it is broken or not working at all. ???
