I'm Confused....
« on: April 30, 2008, 08:22:38 AM »
I've read the FAQs, and I'm still confused.  A local (for us, over an hour away) gun dealer has a .30-06 with an NK serial number, 1996.  I'm thinking of buying it for the frame and stock to put my 7mm-08 barrel on.  Can I do this?  Thanks, Pete

Ya , YOU can fit the 7mm barrel to the 30/06 frame but H&R will not fit a factory ( high pressure ) barrel to it . The factory will not fit these barrels to a frame made before 1998 or 1999

Thanks Stimpy, That's what I thought.  The guys got a good price on it, and if the barrel checks out clean, I'll buy it for the frame and stock and sell the barrel.  I already have a SS '06 Handi.  It's over a two hour drive there and back, so I don't want to run for nothing.  He's also got a .17 HMR and a '93 .22 Hornet.  He wants 189.00 for the Hornet and I think 149.00 for the 17.

Dah, I just woke up, Good morning Pete!!  Why don't I just buy it and put my '06 barrel on it and put the 08 on the newer frame my 06 barrel is on????  End of problem.

Pete

As H&R considers both high pressure rounds , just put the 08 barrel on the 06 that your getting and don;t mess with your other 06 at all that way you may only have to fit 1 barrel not 2 .  ;)

I'm lucking out on that one, Stimpy.  The 08 barrel is already factory fit to the frame the 06 is on, so it'll jump back on that one and only have the new frame to fit to the 06.  Funny thing, I got 3 factory fit barrels to one frame, and put all three of them on 3 "new" frames.  I juggled a bit and they all locked up beautifully; did the feeler guage bit and all.  Then I fired all of them. The brand new .22-250 barrel poped open on firing.  First thing I did was look at the latch shelf.  There was a very distinct high burr on the left edge.  I filed it off and it was fixed.

It was blowing 40 to 60 the day I put those rifles together.  That's why I was inside doing it.  But when each was finished, I stepped out on the porch and chucked a shot at the 300 yard gong (an old propane tank).  When I fired the .357, I aimed about two feet high and 3 into the wind.  I let out a Whoop when the gong rang!!  Not bad for a pistol bullet!
