223rem 1in12"
« on: April 27, 2008, 03:28:39 PM »
I was wondering what bullet weight the 1 in 12" twist was made for . Both ruger and remington have this in there 26" barrel varmint rifles in 223 remington.

Most likely 55gr and under, the faster 22-250 uses a 1 in 14 twist which will do a 55 gr bullet at higher velocity.  The Varmint rifles were most likely intended for the 40 to 45gr bullets, if the crown is good I would expect 55 grainers to work well.  Larry

I agree. A 223 MIGHT shoot a 60 gr. ok, some do, but most will not with this twist. I would expect 40-52 gr. to do the best.

50-55grs. I have .223's and 22-250's so I compromise with 52 and 53grs.  Mainly buy you a box of 50's, a box of 52/53's, and a box of 55's and have a contest.  Once you have a winner, start buying them in boxes of 500 'cause those .223's are fun to shoot. :D

It primarily depends on the dimensions of your bullet and a bit on the condition of your barrel (think drag on bullet surface) - most likely a clean smooth 1:12 twist barrel will shoot up to a typical 62 grain grain .224 bullet with accuracy. The longer the bullet the more rpm's it takes to stabalize - the general way to get heavier bullets is to make them longer.

My AR 15 has a 1 in 7 twist, shoots 55 grain on up very well. Was surprised it did so well with 55's............

My 1:12" twist CAR-15 shoots Nosler 60s just great (1.5 moa at 200 meters with irons) and at just 2700 fps too.     ::)
